Hipster Hotline: Superb (comic)

Superb v1-001

We’ve had all kinds of superheroes. LGBTQ, females, males, adults, children, robots, even villains. But, what about a superhero with Down syndrome or at least one starring in his own comic? No? Then let me introduce you to Superb.

A meteor landed giving people superpowers, including Jonah AKA Cosmosis, a teenager secretly using his superpowers to help people. Uh oh! Cue the evil corporation trying to capture him because, you know the drill, superpowered people are dangerous. But Foresight wants to turn these super people into super killers, working for them, of course. In fact, maybe this was Foresight’s plan all along. What do I mean by that? Read the comic. …I’m winking right now, just letting you know.

Hipster Hotline: Machida-kun no Sekai

machida00

Mangaka ANDOU Yuki didn’t change the manga game,  but she did make Machida-kun to Sekai a solid story worth anyone’s time.

Machida-kun no Sekai stars a high schooler named Machida Hajime. A guy not that good at school or much anything else. But, the one thing he absolutely excels at is relating to other people. Machida knows how to talk to others, get them to open up which leads to him helping them in some way. This is a character piece. Every chapter Machida is either helping someone to trying to understand his own feelings about people and the world around him.

Hipster Hotline: Sonic the Hedgehog (comics reboot)

Sonic02
Nice tail. You know what I mean!

I’m glad SatAM comic is dead. Yeah, I said it.

Keep in mind, this is coming from a person who loved the cartoon back in the nineties and read at least three years worth of the series’ comic book continuation. But, it got convoluted. Mulitple Eggmen, Sonics, and an attempt to reboot that universe so writers didn’t have to reference anything that came before (and not show certain characters someone was suing over). Plus, it was a constant struggle between the game and show characters for screen time. It wasn’t a bad comic but it was time for a reboot—a hard reboot.

Hipster Hotline: Ghostbusters 101 (comic)

Ghostbusters 101 003-024

Ghostbusters IDW comics, great stuff. I remember reading them regularly then stopped during a storyline I wasn’t interested in (and can’t remember), but Ghostbusters Crossing Over pulled me back in. While waiting for the next issue I decided to check out a previous dimensional story about the OG Ghostbusters first meeting the Answer the Call team. I’m sure it’ll be good. I was wrong.

It’s great!

What’s there not to like? The OG Ghostbusters are doing their ghostbusting thing, making great ghostbuster banter and busting…ghosts. What more could you want? Erik Burnham knows how to write the characters and it shows. Now, take all that great interaction, add in the Answer the Call Ghostbusters and Kevin. Boom! Fun, fun, fun!

Hipster Hotline: Mech Cadet Yu (comic)

yu00

A boy and his mech. A classic. Maybe too classic.

Mech Cadet Yu is a comic series about Yu Standford, a janitor working with his mother at a military academy where–somehow–sentient mechs regularly appear and choose a human partner. Why? Heck if I know, but it’s science fiction, don’t ask questions. As you guessed, a mech chooses Yu and…and…and isn’t it pretty convenient the mechs have human-sized cockpits? And just what the hell do these thinking robots need human pilots for? Does Optimus Prime need a driver to–NO! No! Don’t go down the rabbit hole, Red. Just…let it go. Science fiction.

Questions aside, I like this series. Reminds me of Robotech mixed with Gundam. Definitely inspired by those or similar stories. The main character, Yu, is likable. His mom is fantastic, probably my favorite character, but the Chief engineer is up there too. If you’re familiar with these type of stories, you know Yu has an asshole rival and Park fits the bill. She, yes, she (and no romantic BS, the girl’s an elitist jerk) does the classic crap you expect, but she does get humanizing moments that keep her from being a walking parody. She’s the most interesting of the cadets. Yu is a good kid, but he’s your standard optimistic nice guy. Want more development from him and at least he later gets information that dents his ideas what a hero is.

Sanchez and Olivetti round out the squad. They’re window dressing. Basic as can be. They need development, stat.

The worst thing I can say is I wish more characters had layers. I don’t hate anyone expect the evil military people (shocked?) and the monster bugs, but I want more character dynamics and interactions. Give me some Park and Sanchez alone talk. Yu and Olivetti moments. I want them not just doing stuff around each other but forming genuine bonds. I’m more interested in the mechs than most the human cast. Also, start answering questions, comic. I’m getting less and less patient with stories all about piling up mysterious questions without at least hinting at answers. Lay down some cards, we ain’t playing poker here.

Mech Cadet Yu is pretty by the books in terms of plot, but the sparks for greatness are there. Make the characters more interesting and watch it fly. Veee!

Hipster Hotline: Ash VS Evil Dead

Ash_vs_promo00

Finally caught up on Ash VS Evil Dead’s third season. I go to make the fan discussion rounds and learn Starz canceled the show. What the what!?

Ash VS Evil Dead continues the adventures of Ash Williams from the Evil Dead movies. Ash Williams, along with, fellow Ghostbeaters Kelly and Pablo, fight the forces of evil from turning the world into hell on Earth. What makes AVED great is its perfect balance of horror and comedy. The two genres are hard to combine, usually resulting in one vastly over-powering the other or creating a horror/comedy mish-mash without a spark. AVED does horror/comedy right. That alone is worth the price of admission.

I’m saddened but, can’t say I’m not completely surprised. But, I sure didn’t think it’d get canceled now. Maybe the fourth or fifth season, yeah, but the show is currently running on all cylinders. For goodness sake, Lucy Lawless is part of the cast! That automatically ups the awesome to infinity. But, yeah, while great, AVED doesn’t get the promotion other shows get. At least, I’ve never seen ads or promos for it. I happened to stumble across learning season three was airing. Starz dropped, smashed, and buried the ball in the promotion department, in my opinion.

Worse yet, Bruce Campbell decided to retire the character after the announcement. So, no moving to Netflix or another network. Sucks.

Well, maybe Bruce will change his mind, but who knows. Right now, once the third season finale (now series finale) releases, Ash VS Evil Dead is…dead. In the mood for over-the-top gore and a big helping of fun? Watch Ash VS Evil Dead. And this is coming from someone who hasn’t watched the movies.

…What? I’ve seen YouTube clips. Don’t judge me!

Sidenote: Shout outs to Kelly and Pablo. I’m impressed how much their characters grew on me.

Hipster Hotline: International Waters (podcast)

IntlWaters00

You like podcasts? I like podcasts. Something fun to do while I’m ignoring the world around me. Good stuff.

International Waters is a comedy “game show” podcast hosted by Dave Holmes. Two teams (one United Kingdom, one United States) battle it out to find out whose country is best. …Yeah, actually its an excuse to get funny people to answer pop culture questions and play fun games. And, it’s awesome!

Best part is a lot of the guests are people I haven’t heard of, so I can look up and enjoy their previous work. It’s a funny podcast with a fun host. Want to laugh? Got some traveling to do? Give it a listen.

Hipster Hotline: Disney’s Adventures of the Gummi Bears

gruffi00

You know what? I miss Disney’s Adventures of the Gummi Bears. I rarely think of it but I enjoyed watching it centuries ago.

DAGB tells the story of a small band of talking bears living in a forest believed to be nothing but legends. They meet a human boy, named Cavin who changes their lives forever.

After re-watching the first episode I realized the show aged well. I think I know why. DAGB is treated like an animated fairytale. It takes place in a medieval world comprising of Ogres, wizards, monsters, etc. And, it has a timeless feel. It’s not bogged down by pop culture references or 4th wall breaking. Good, well-written storytelling is all you need and DAGB delivers.

I’m a fan of kids show not talking down to their audience and I never felt that watching DAGB. Again, well-written, and we even get character development and overall story arcs. I love any episode having to do with Great Gummi magic or technology, makes the world feel lived in.

Hipster Hotline: Chichi Kogusa

CK00

Here’s a good one you probably never heard of. Chichi Kogusa hits you in the heart but thankfully doesn’t get melodramatic.

Chichi Kogusa is the story of Torakichi, a traveling medicine seller forced to take care for his young son, Shirou, after his wife dies.

First things first, the art is good. Really good! It’s not hyper realistic or anything like that but it’s well drawn and expressive and…cute. It fits the tone of the story perfectly. I can’t get over how much I love the art.

Back to the story, Chichi Kogusa deals with the struggle of a working father connecting with a son he barely got to know due to his job. We see father and son slowly grow closer while both still dealing with the lost of their wife and mother respectively. An emotional tale but hopeful at the same time.

Hipster Hotline: Majin Tantei Nōgami Neuro

neuro01

When you think shonen, what comes to mind? Young protagonist. Spiky hair. Loud. Fighter.  Training to be the best. A female love interest?

Majin Tantei Nōgami Neuro doesn’t have any of that. Well, it has bits of certain parts but not how you expect.

Neuro Nōgami is a powerful demon who feeds on mysteries. After solving all Demon World’s mysteries, he goes to Earth, a blue and green KFC full of mysteries waiting to be found, solved, and consumed. It’s basically, Supernatural Detective Conan but funnier and had an ending we’ll live long enough to read.

Neuro, wanting to keep a low profile, offers a high school girl, Yako Katsuragi, an offer to solve her father’s murder in exchange of being the “leader” of his detective agency. Their relationship is the cornerstone of the series. Completely messed up but eventually the two develop a mutual respect for each other. Let me say, Yako is one of my favorite female shonen characters. She’s not there to be a love interest or sex symbol. She’s her own funny, developed character who could’ve easily been a boy if the mangaka desired. This is as much her story as Neuro’s.
