Batman Beyond Vol. 2 Rise of the Demon (Part Two)

Writers: Vita Ayala & Steve Orlando,  Pencils: Siya Oum, Inks: Dexter Vines, Colors: Tony Aviña

You’re perfect, you’re beautiful, you look like Linda Evangelista.

Filling out the volume is a story created by a guest team called Batwoman Beyond. There’s a Batgirl in the Beyond universe? Nice! I like the premise. Batgirl works in a tough part of town not even Batman frequents. Why? Wish someone in the story told me.

This takes place during the Rise of the Demon arc so yay for Max doing something other than waiting around and being worried. Commissioner Gordon is kidnapped and it’s up to Batgirl and Max to save her. Max, you need an alias, my friend. And, Gordon, are you the same Gordon from the regular arc because here you’re drawn more like older Barbara Gordon. But, I swear I thought the main story Barbara Gordon was her granddaughter. She looked middle age at the most. I’m confused.

Batman Beyond Vol. 2 Rise of the Demon (Part One)

Writer: Dan Jurgens, Artist: Bernard Chang, Colorist: Marcelo Maiolo

Bruce is still waiting for Young Justice season three.

Let’s jump right in with the multiparter, Rise of the Demon. Following the events of volume one, Bruce Wayne is back and everyone’s happy. Looks like this volume is all about happiness and—oops! The League of Assassins are back and ready to assassinate…their own member, Curare? What the schway? Okay, sidebar, how does the League continue to exist? They’re always getting stomped by Batman or some other hero or infighting. Maybe save all that bloodthirsty dysfunction for Fortnite.

Rise of the Demon is a good story, but I liked the previous one more. I enjoyed Terry back in the game and Bruce reflecting on his life but I felt there’s too much inner dialogue in these comics. You always have to be in their head. It’s a general problem I have with western comics. You never escape the main character’s constant thinking. Not a fan of it, but that’s just me.

Batman Beyond Vol. 1: Escaping The Grave

Writer: Dan Jurgens, Artist: Bernard Chang, Colorist: Marcelo Maiolo

Batman: Applejack is best pony, period.

For those not familiar with how western comics work, as a way to bring in new readers companies will renumber issues after awhile. It’s a marking gimmick. Basically, this volume one isn’t the true Batman Beyond volume one, but a jumping on point for those wanting to give the series a chance. Everyone on the same page? Let’s begin.

Escaping The Grave, I like it. It feels like Batman Beyond. Yeah, I’ve seen the cartoon series and read previous Beyond comics, but I stopped reading the series years ago. Can’t remember why. Think DC’s New 52 had something to do with it (when in doubt, blame New 52). Either way, I lost interest. After reading the volume my Batman Beyond thirst is back.

The volume picks up after the last arc (which I didn’t read) ended. Terry McGinnis is back (Huh?), his little brother, Max, knows he’s Batman (What?), and Bruce Wayne, Terry’s mentor, is dead (The f*ck?). Whoever wrote the last arc when out with a bang. At least this writer’s quick to explain all the important past plot points, including a general recap of Batman Beyond’s origin. Again, nice for old and new fans.

Nice tail. You know what I mean!

I’m glad SatAM comic is dead. Yeah, I said it.

Keep in mind, this is coming from a person who loved the cartoon back in the nineties and read at least three years worth of the series’ comic book continuation. But, it got convoluted. Mulitple Eggmen, Sonics, and an attempt to reboot that universe so writers didn’t have to reference anything that came before (and not show certain characters someone was suing over). Plus, it was a constant struggle between the game and show characters for screen time. It wasn’t a bad comic but it was time for a reboot—a hard reboot.

Hipster Hotline: Ghostbusters 101 (comic)

Ghostbusters 101 003-024

Ghostbusters IDW comics, great stuff. I remember reading them regularly then stopped during a storyline I wasn’t interested in (and can’t remember), but Ghostbusters Crossing Over pulled me back in. While waiting for the next issue I decided to check out a previous dimensional story about the OG Ghostbusters first meeting the Answer the Call team. I’m sure it’ll be good. I was wrong.

It’s great!

What’s there not to like? The OG Ghostbusters are doing their ghostbusting thing, making great ghostbuster banter and busting…ghosts. What more could you want? Erik Burnham knows how to write the characters and it shows. Now, take all that great interaction, add in the Answer the Call Ghostbusters and Kevin. Boom! Fun, fun, fun!

Hipster Hotline: Mech Cadet Yu (comic)

yu00

A boy and his mech. A classic. Maybe too classic.

Mech Cadet Yu is a comic series about Yu Standford, a janitor working with his mother at a military academy where–somehow–sentient mechs regularly appear and choose a human partner. Why? Heck if I know, but it’s science fiction, don’t ask questions. As you guessed, a mech chooses Yu and…and…and isn’t it pretty convenient the mechs have human-sized cockpits? And just what the hell do these thinking robots need human pilots for? Does Optimus Prime need a driver to–NO! No! Don’t go down the rabbit hole, Red. Just…let it go. Science fiction.

Questions aside, I like this series. Reminds me of Robotech mixed with Gundam. Definitely inspired by those or similar stories. The main character, Yu, is likable. His mom is fantastic, probably my favorite character, but the Chief engineer is up there too. If you’re familiar with these type of stories, you know Yu has an asshole rival and Park fits the bill. She, yes, she (and no romantic BS, the girl’s an elitist jerk) does the classic crap you expect, but she does get humanizing moments that keep her from being a walking parody. She’s the most interesting of the cadets. Yu is a good kid, but he’s your standard optimistic nice guy. Want more development from him and at least he later gets information that dents his ideas what a hero is.

Sanchez and Olivetti round out the squad. They’re window dressing. Basic as can be. They need development, stat.

The worst thing I can say is I wish more characters had layers. I don’t hate anyone expect the evil military people (shocked?) and the monster bugs, but I want more character dynamics and interactions. Give me some Park and Sanchez alone talk. Yu and Olivetti moments. I want them not just doing stuff around each other but forming genuine bonds. I’m more interested in the mechs than most the human cast. Also, start answering questions, comic. I’m getting less and less patient with stories all about piling up mysterious questions without at least hinting at answers. Lay down some cards, we ain’t playing poker here.

Mech Cadet Yu is pretty by the books in terms of plot, but the sparks for greatness are there. Make the characters more interesting and watch it fly. Veee!

Literally Chillin’ Like A Villain (X-Men Gold #25)

X-Men_Gold_Vol_2_2500

Been a while since I read X-Men comics. Used to devour them but I had my fill and moved on. Years later, I’m back! For how long? Heck if I know.

Okay, so Marvel’s putting out X-Men Red, Blue, and Gold. X-Men Red #1 was my true return, not bad. Plus, I started at issue one so not totally confused. X-Men Blue #25 wasn’t too confusing but was the least interesting because of it. Why do all evil supervillain women never wear shirts? Time for X-Men Gold #25. Let’s read along together.

First, I like the art. Really pulled me in. Again, I don’t know what’s happening but I like it! Probably because it’s a fight issue. A big fight issue with lots of X-Men kicking X-Ass. See, Storm and others are in prison and a god is attacking France and BAM BOOM POW I’m having fun.

Kitty Pride is the team leader? I can dig it. Her and Colossus are engaged? Wow! To quote Wolverine “About time.” Ink is back. Thought he was stuck in Too Many X-Men Hell. Hope to see more from him. Oh! It’s Armor! I love—Whoa! She had a growth spurt. Come on, comic. You can’t give her an original costume? Ink, I understand, but it’s freaking Armor. Put some respect on her barely legal name.

Pyro’s an X-Man now? Just as shocked as Nightcrawler and Kitty Pride. Storm has a magic hammer? Whaaaaaaa? Oh, well, it’s comics. Cool looking costume though. Fighty-fight. Fighty-fight. Good art. Loving it. They won! Great job everyone. …Who’s the lady wearing shorts? Good job to you too, I guess.

X-Men Gold00

…Really, comic? I got no idea who this person is, but she’s relaxing in a big house at night in front of the fireplace in a robe HOLDING A GLASS OF WINE. Yeah, she’s freaking evil. I get it. What? Did the pencilers not have enough panels to draw her stroking a white cat?

Anyway, she’s setting in for the night but still has on lipstick. Gotta look good talking to her sentinel guest. Uh-oh, what are they planning?

Fun. Great action, great art. Don’t know what’s happening, but I’ll at least try to keep reading up to Kitty and Peter’s wedding. Unless one of them dies. Dun Dun Duuuuuun!

Angel Season 11 Thoughts (spoilers)

angel

Didn’t like it.

I assume the story team wanted a more character driven, intimate season with a focus on Angel and Illyria’s pasts. But, why did it have to be so boring?

Hipster Hotline: Alone (comic)

Alone 1 - 41 copy

Ever stumble across something by chance, a book, song, TV show, etc., and after enjoying it you knew you had to have more? Instant love. It happens to us all, it’s a wonderful feeling. My most recent experience came from a comic book series called Alone, written by Bruno Gazzotti with art by Fabien Vehlmann. From what I gathered it’s originally a French comic with at least ten volumes released. English websites currently have the first seven volumes translated.

Alone is about five children; Dodzi, Leila, Ivan, Camille, and Terry, seemingly the only people left in their entire city. What happened? Where is everyone? What will they do? Questions asked in any post-apocalyptic story but, like with any story, it’s the execution that matters.

No adults here to bail them out. They have to somehow figures thing out on their own. Fortunately, most of them are resourceful. Dodzi, the mature one due to personal circumstances. Leila, a determined tinkerer. Ivan, the lonely rich kid looking for answers. Camille, the model student slowly coming out of her shell. And, Terry, the youngest, also kinda of a brat. They’re mostly smart kids but still kids. Heck, any adult who gained free reign over a city would enjoy the benefits and our protagonists do just that, a way to have some fun while figuring out what’s going on. It’s a tough balance to pull off but the creators walk that line perfectly.
