Tattooed Teenage Machiavellian Fighters from Beverly Hills [One Piece 1167]

Shhh! Shanks is undercover!

Quite the truth-seeker that Shanks is, eh?

But instead of heading for Laugh Tale, Shanks decides to take a different approach: Learning as much as he can about the true enemies of the world—Imu and the Celestial Dragons.

It’s safe to say Shanks inherited Roger’s will to learn the truth about the world, but how much did he know before going to the Holy Land? Roger didn’t want to tell him anything that happened on Laugh Tale, but there’s someone else who could’ve pointed Shanks in the Celestial Dragon’s direction…Blackbeard!

[Thanks to LunaPianArt for putting this Blackbeard idea in my head, by the way.]

“Well, everything except skateboarding. Where’s a guy gotta go up here to do a 720 kickflip?”

Here’s what I’m thinking: Shanks confronts Blackbeard who spills some beans about the Celestial Dragons being the final boss of the world and the ones behind, well, everything. After their battle, Shanks decides learning the truth for himself and feigns loyalty to Team Imu. Makes sense, right?

Does that mean Shanks intentionally attacked a World Government ship to steal the gum-gum fruit? Does it also mean Shanks purposely got his arm bitten off to remove the Holy Knight’s tattoo? Yeah, probably. This guy has been planning to take down the World Government, something Gol D. Roger couldn’t do, for a looong time.

Hope You Like Flashbacks [One Piece 1152]

Because you’re getting a flashback within a flashback. A three-minute explanation? Yeah, right.

You know… Thanks to One Piece Live Action, I miss the simpler arcs of One Piece. Where arcs didn’t have the main duty of expositing world and character lore while constantly setting up the final war arc of the series.

Weird, right? I’m all about the One Piece lore, yet here I am complaining about it. But I don’t hate it, not at all! I just want more of the fun stuff that made me fall in love with One Piece too. The Straw Hats interacting with each other, the zany villains, the feeling of a grand adventure instead of constant melodrama p0rn. This is a different manga than what began.

Here we are at the flashback portion of the arc and I’m just going through the motions. Sure, I’m excited about the coming lore dumps, but then it’s back to Basic Bro Imu the Evil and his boring henchmen. The only thing interesting about Imu is the mystery boxes surrounding him. I need more than that for a character to interest me.

Worst part is Loki spent the morning tap dancing inside a barn.

Oh, Brother! [One Piece 1137]

Show, Don't Tell.

I guess Oda didn’t get the memo.

Lots of telling in this chapter, huh? It’s all setting up the upcoming conflict and the big Elbaph flashback, of course. Let’s see: Ancient Giants, Loki, Hajrudin, Other Giant Nations, Linlin, Saul, King Harald, King Harald’s Baby Mommas… That’s a lot of ground to cover. Put me down for at least ten Elbaph flashback chapters.

…Oh, what the heck? Make it twelve chapters!

Hajrudin wants to be King of the Pir—erm—Giants. Can we please have a democracy somewhere in One Piece? No? Okay, then.

Also, for someone carrying foreign blood, Hajrudin had the people cheering him on after making his king declaration at the feast. What happened to all the MAGA Giants? Is there a proud giant stealthy waiting in the background to ask Hajrudin for his birth certificate? Guess we’ll just have to wait and see.

The twist: Shanks is a triplet! See you in 100 chapters, Shamar.

I do like confirmation Giant territories exist outside Elbaph. Where are they? Are they part of the World Government? I hope those questions are answered soon.

This Barto Club Is Closed, Forever [One Piece 1126]

You mess with the red-haired bull, you get the pistol horns.

I know what Bartolomeo was thinking.

He’s on a personal mission on Gartel Island (located in Emperor Shanks’ territory) showing Luffy’s dominance by burning Shanks’ flag. And, I bet he thought his barrier-barrier fruit would protect him from any Red-Haired Pirate attack. Too bad for him, strong haki messes up many seemingly overpowered devil fruits. Not to mention, I doubt old Bart thought that Emperor Shanks himself (along with his senior officers) would pull up to confront little ole him.

That punk, Bartolomeo, actually burned an Emperor’s flag then waited for someone to show up. What the hell was he thinking?!

He’s lucky the only things he got for his transgression was a butt-whooping and his ship destroyed. But, you know? I get the sneaky suspicion Oda had Bart’s ship destroyed by Yasopp only for him to get a new ship that’s a tribute to the Thousand Sunny. And, maybe the Barto Club washes up on Elbaph? Nika fanboys + Luffy fanboys = A good time for all!

Let’s talk about how differently each Emperor is approaching finding the One Piece in this chapter. Yes, I know Chief Shanks wasn’t looking for One Piece here, but he was pretty passive about going to Laugh Tale until recently. I think his desire to find One Piece is less about want and more about keeping it from less savory people.

They’re fine. I can see their parachutes!

The Paramount Booty Call

Shanks1

Make love, stop war. What’s Red-Haired Shanks real movitation for stopping the Paramount War?

We all know Shanks is a laid back guy. The main reason he’s so popular with other pirates is because he has the best weed, allegedly. He loves to party and he loves the ladies, well, loves the Makino. So, why did Captain Party decide to stop the Paramount War between Team Edward and Team Sengoku? Answer: Ass.

Let’s look at his first appearance all the way in chapter one. He spent months at Foosha Village on business. Business? Riiiiiight. What business does Shanks have in East Blue? Taking his crew to strip clubs and bowling alleys, that’s what! But, that’s for his crew. I’m thinking he just wanted to spend time with his Makino but left to do “business” to keep his crew happy. Sly dog.

Fast forward ten years with our roguish captain horny as hell, looking for ANY excuse to get back to Foosha Village and tap that bar maiden backside. What’s this? A war at Marine HQ? This is it! His chance finally arrives!

Shanks conveniently arrives in the nick of time to end the war, knowing he could have joined up with Whitebeard in the beginning. He even meet with Whitebeard before the war! Dude couldn’t suggest they team-up for shits and giggles? Course not! He had to be the big hero to impress his girl. Bros before hoes, my friend. Whitebeard is dead because you didn’t follow ye Pirate Bro Code.

The Funeral set him back a few days but mission accomplished. Saved Whitebeard’s crew and now sadden by his death he has more than enough reason to visit Makino for a double dose of hero/grief lovin’.

makino baby

Uh-oh! Someone didn’t use a Luffy! Time to haul ass back to the New World!
