My Hero Vigilantes, Season One: Just Watch It!

It’s fantastic!

…? Oh! You wanna know why?

Well, it’s a faithful adaption of the manga series. Sure, some .5 (i.e. bonus) chapters were omitted and some scenes were altered or shown in a different order than the manga, but I assume it was to make the season more cohesive, avoid copyright issues (The manga’s filled with one-off or minor characters whose appearance references fictional characters from other companies. Heck, I’m surprised Ichimoku Samazu [Fake Cyclops] and Jube Namimaru [Fake Wolverine] made it into the anime unaltered.), or save time.

The companies behind the series, Toho and Bones Film, had a lot to pack into these thirteen episodes and I think they did a great job keeping the overall feel and heart of the original manga.

Adapting a manga can be difficult when it’s a currently running series. Which scenes are important and what aren’t, making filler so as to not catch up with the source material, and having to budget anime production costs for a series you don’t know how long it’ll last are just some of the problems that creep up. Fortunately, that wasn’t the case for My Hero Vigilantes’ anime.

The manga ended years ago, so the animation team knew exactly how long the series would be and budgeted its cost accordingly. It’s probably a big reason the animation looks so darn good. They know how many seasons they’ll have and can work within that limitation.

Buzz Off! (That Bee Scene In Episode 10) [My Hero Academia: Vigilantes]

<—Spoilers for this episode.—>

Yes, I’ve been watching the show. Yes, I LOVE it. And, yes, I’ll talk a little about the season as a whole when it wraps it. But, this couldn’t wait.

Kids: If someone wants to stuff live bees up your vagina. Say NO!

Yeah, I remember that bee-gina scene from the manga, but still…Yikes! Did you see how many bees came out? Kuin Hachisuka may not be the most evil villain in the My Heroverse, but she’s definitely the rudest! Because you don’t get much ruder than shoving bees in you friend’s hoo-hah.

5 Things You (Don’t) Need To Know Before Watching My Hero Vigilantes

What’s wrong, friend? That FOMO feeling’s got you down? Afraid all the cool kids know about My Hero Vigilantes and you don’t? Well, I say don’t fret about it!

Seriously don’t. Just watch the anime cold and enjoy yourself.

…Still here? Fine. Here’re five spoiler-free things you can know about My Hero Vigilantes (assuming it’s a faithful adaption of the manga).

1.) You don’t need to have watched and/or read My Hero Academia to enjoy the series.

My Hero Academia (manga) started in July 2014. My Hero Vigilantes (manga) began in August 2016. The two-year old world of MHA had already established itself enough to carry a spin-off without relying on the main characters or plots from the main series.

Not to mention, the creators of My Hero Vigilantes (writer, Hideyuki Furuhashi and illustrator, Betten Court) could always run any questions or ideas by Horikoshi, ensuring nothing they did broke the main series’ continuity. Basically: Vigilantes taking place in the same world as MHA is all you need to know.

Sure, your enjoyment may be enhanced with knowledge from the main series, but it isn’t essential. My Hero Vigilantes contains it’s own story with it’s own main characters for you to invest in and join on their journey. Dekus and Bakugos need not apply!

2.) My Hero Vigilantes takes place five years before the start of My Hero Academia.

MHV is a prequel. That way its creators don’t have to keep changing course if something major happens to the world in the present main series. It gave the MHV creators additional free-reign over their story. And as a byproduct, it allowed readers to see some supporting characters from the main series when they were a bit younger, learning some things about them we never would’ve learned in MHA. A win-win for everyone.

My Hero Academia Fans Excited Over My Hero Vigilantes Anime Announcement (Even Though They Have No Idea What That Is) [2D News]

If you’re an average My Hero Academia fan, you’re probably happy your favorite series is getting an anime original sequel.

Well, I got some new for you:

  1. My Hero Vigilantes is a prequel that begins roughly five years before the start of My Hero Academia. And…
  2. The story is based on the spin-off manga, My Hero Vigilantes written by Hideyuki Furuhashi and illustrated by Betten Court.

Is it good? Yes. Yes! YES! It’s good. But, if you’re thinking this is just another battle shonen series like My Hero Academia, then think again.

My Hero Vigilantes is a more street-level character-focused series. Sure, it’s got action, but it’s not the focus. Think of it more as a Shonen slice-of-life series and you’ll be fine. The trade-off with there being less action is more time to develop the main and supporting characters. MHV draws it’s audience in with fun and interesting characters while expanding on the lore of the My Hero world. It’s not MHA’s successor. It’s an addendum to that universe.

Look, don’t think about it too hard, alright? It’s not My Hero Academia but a separate story taking place in that same world. When April rolls around, sit back, relax and have a good time watching it.

Then regret making Bakugo the World’s Best Hero and not Koichi. How DARE you not vote for him! Number 34?! You bastards! I’ll get you for this! I swear! You’ll PAAAAYYYYYY!!!!!!!

World’s Best Hero: Koichi Haimawari Rally [My Hero Academia]

Did you know there’s an event currently happening to pick the best hero in the My Hero Academia Universe? Of course you do. Just like I’m sure you’ve been voting for Koichi Haimawari/Skycrawler EVERY SINGLE DAY.

Let me tell you wonder folks something. Skycrawler is the best hero in My Hero Academia and My Hero Vigilantes. He spent years out on the mean streets using his quirk to help people like you and me. And he did it without a hero license. He didn’t care that he could be arrested for vigilantism. He’s just a nice guy from a small town who does the right thing because it’s right.

Do you know who’s currently number one in the poll? Katsuki Bakugo. You think Katsuki Bakugo would risk jail to to help someone without a hero license? No. He doesn’t care about the little guy. All he cares is taking down the big bad villains. The Instant Villains? Small-time crooks? Nah. He’s all about the All For One’s and the Shigaraki’s. We don’t need a hero who doesn’t look out for the little guy!

Plus, Katsuki Bakugo is weird. He’s always yelling at people and blowing things up. Heck, his hero name is Great Explosion Murder God Dynamight. Who in their right mind is proud calling themself a “murder god”?! Weird I tell you. Just weird.

Welcome Back, Koichi! [My Hero Academia 424]

Koichi Haimawari signals the the beginning of the end for My Hero Academia.

Yes, Koichi’s only in ONE panel and a small ONE at that, but he’s there. Wow! Just look at that costume! Horikoshi draws him so darn good. Koichi’s eye shield looks different, a definite improvement. Overall, his hero costume looks better like this, with the hoodie on, as opposed to Deku’s hero costume looking better with the hoodie/mask off. I-I just can’t get over how amazing he looks in that ONE panel. Eek! I’m so hap hap happy!

Consequences. We’re starting to see that starting with Deku, All Might, and Bakugo. All Might will survive but we don’t know if he’ll be able to move on his own without assistance such as with a cane or wheelchair. Bakugo’s whole body was wrecked, including his heart, lungs, and arm. I wonder if his arm rehabilitation will yield fruitful results or will he need special equipment to fully utilize his quirk on his right arm? Also, Bakugo’s heart really has me worried. It’d be interesting if he gets an artificial heart. From what Doctor Yoshi said, I don’t see him going back to U.A. for at least a month, and that’s me being generous.

Remember kids: Dreams can come true!

Your Friendly Neighborhood Skycrawler [My Hero Vigilantes 126] [Finale]

What a ride!

Got a lot of thoughts bouncing in my wacky little brain. Thoughts about this chapter, the series as a whole, whether we’ll see the Skycrawler again. But, first let me say I’m happy. I’m happy I got to enjoy such a well thought out, well-written series. Happy this manga series ended on a hopeful note. Happy My Hero Vigilantes ended on its own terms. But yeah, I’m sad to see it go.

Let’s jump in. This chapter’s great! It did a great job updating us on the fates of the main and supporting characters while delivering a typical fun Vigilantes chapters. Koichi’s massive debt and impending lawsuits keeping him out of Japan (and away from All For One and what happens in the series) makes sense. It also sucks. The guy saved Pop, the Police and medical professionals at the hospital and he gets slapped with lawsuits? Bleh! The price of being a vigilante finally caught up with Koichi, but at least he’s now a hero. So, good for you, Skycrawler!

126 chapters. 1260 times Koichi almost died.

I love Koichi saving the plane. That’s his thing. He helps people. But now he does so on a massive scale. His Skycrawler costume’s cool too! I like the nods to Captain Celebrity’s costume. Koichi receiving the New York All Might hoodie reminds us where he came from. That no matter the outfit, he’ll always be an All Might fanboy.

The Skycrawler Saga [My Hero Vigilantes 125]

Koichi Haimawari is officially a hero!

As predicted, Koichi’s currently living in the U.S. as Captain Celebrity’s official sidekick, designated CCC-02: Skycrawler. WOO!!!!!! I’m so proud of you, Koichi! You made it, my boy! You did it!! AHHHHHH!!!!!!!!!

…Okay…okay. I’m calm… AFO’s been looking into Koichi’s background for a few months, so I’m guessing it’s been about that long since the Naruhata Lockdown Arc happened. Sounds about right.

Interesting how AFO’s direct decision to go all in on the Nomu project was because of Number 6’s fight against Koichi. Sure, the Nomu was something AFO was planning for years, but I think it was mostly a plan to defeat All Might or at least keep him at a distance. From what I gathered from AFO this chapter, he’s now going to use Nomu (the battle version) more as general soldiers rather than ONLY to defeat All Might. This would also explain Hood and the USJ Nomu we saw in the bio-tank. They were probably created to specifically combat All Might. Well, we know USJ Nomu was. It’s just confirmed Hood is part of the All Might Hater’s Club too. His desire to fight strong opponents supports the theory.

Red Riding Hoodie [My Hero Vigilantes 124]

It’s Happening!

Time to grow up? Get a “real” job? Wrong, Koichi Haimawari! You’ve been hit by the hero bug. Helping people is in your blood, son. Don’t fight it. And thanks to Makoto and Captain Celebrity, you won’t have to.

Koichi’s becoming an official hero! Not only that, he’s becoming Captain Celebrity’s sidekick! Makoto and C.C. claiming Koichi worked for the good captain all along was a nice way to keep him from getting arrested by the police. Now that Makoto knows Koichi wants to continue helping people, she’s gonna make it a reality. Koichi can be a bit too easy-going. But, now he’s contractually obligated to (I assume) get a hero license and move to America to become C.C.’s Robin. Good for you, Koichi!

Pop upset over the rise of gas prices and bikini wax

Koichi can also further master his quirk under the tutelage of Captain Celebrity while avoiding any unexpected visits from All For One. Perfect, huh? Everything’s worked out.

Six Appeal [My Hero Vigilantes 123]

End of the road, Number Six.

It’s over. No, not the series…yet. The Naruhata Blackout Arc. Number 6 has been defeated. The town is saved. Well, what’s left of it.

All No. 6 wanted was to have a meaningful life. A life where he’ll be remembered. Unfortunately, All For One twisted his brain to where he tried achieving his goals in the worst way possible. Murder, kidnapping, mass destruction. Those aren’t the most noble ways to become a hero. But, again, what can you expect when you’re raised by AFO? That’s what I love about No. 6. Sure, he’s a bastard through and through, but that’s only possible due to the guidance of the King of The Bastards, AFO. As much as a threat No. 6 was, he never overshadowed the true shit head of the My Hero Universe. It’s gonna be so satisfying seeing AFO taken down in the main series. I already got the DJ booked for the victory party!

Dude, it was a G.I. Jane joke

No. 6 defying “AFO” in his last moment. Given how much of a pawn he is, that was surprising. No. 6 went out on his own terms and achieved what he set out to do, again in the most screwed up way possible. Scarring Koichi, the man he’s wanted dead more than anything else, became the only way he’d truly be remembered. Koichi won’t forget him. Maybe failing to save No. 6 helps lead Koichi down the pro hero path? It’s possible. I really hope so. I’d hate for someone as powerful as Koichi to retire from helping people.
