5 Things You (Don’t) Need To Know Before Watching My Hero Vigilantes

What’s wrong, friend? That FOMO feeling’s got you down? Afraid all the cool kids know about My Hero Vigilantes and you don’t? Well, I say don’t fret about it!

Seriously don’t. Just watch the anime cold and enjoy yourself.

…Still here? Fine. Here’re five spoiler-free things you can know about My Hero Vigilantes (assuming it’s a faithful adaption of the manga).

1.) You don’t need to have watched and/or read My Hero Academia to enjoy the series.

My Hero Academia (manga) started in July 2014. My Hero Vigilantes (manga) began in August 2016. The two-year old world of MHA had already established itself enough to carry a spin-off without relying on the main characters or plots from the main series.

Not to mention, the creators of My Hero Vigilantes (writer, Hideyuki Furuhashi and illustrator, Betten Court) could always run any questions or ideas by Horikoshi, ensuring nothing they did broke the main series’ continuity. Basically: Vigilantes taking place in the same world as MHA is all you need to know.

Sure, your enjoyment may be enhanced with knowledge from the main series, but it isn’t essential. My Hero Vigilantes contains it’s own story with it’s own main characters for you to invest in and join on their journey. Dekus and Bakugos need not apply!

2.) My Hero Vigilantes takes place five years before the start of My Hero Academia.

MHV is a prequel. That way its creators don’t have to keep changing course if something major happens to the world in the present main series. It gave the MHV creators additional free-reign over their story. And as a byproduct, it allowed readers to see some supporting characters from the main series when they were a bit younger, learning some things about them we never would’ve learned in MHA. A win-win for everyone.

My Hero Academia Fans Excited Over My Hero Vigilantes Anime Announcement (Even Though They Have No Idea What That Is) [2D News]

If you’re an average My Hero Academia fan, you’re probably happy your favorite series is getting an anime original sequel.

Well, I got some new for you:

  1. My Hero Vigilantes is a prequel that begins roughly five years before the start of My Hero Academia. And…
  2. The story is based on the spin-off manga, My Hero Vigilantes written by Hideyuki Furuhashi and illustrated by Betten Court.

Is it good? Yes. Yes! YES! It’s good. But, if you’re thinking this is just another battle shonen series like My Hero Academia, then think again.

My Hero Vigilantes is a more street-level character-focused series. Sure, it’s got action, but it’s not the focus. Think of it more as a Shonen slice-of-life series and you’ll be fine. The trade-off with there being less action is more time to develop the main and supporting characters. MHV draws it’s audience in with fun and interesting characters while expanding on the lore of the My Hero world. It’s not MHA’s successor. It’s an addendum to that universe.

Look, don’t think about it too hard, alright? It’s not My Hero Academia but a separate story taking place in that same world. When April rolls around, sit back, relax and have a good time watching it.

Then regret making Bakugo the World’s Best Hero and not Koichi. How DARE you not vote for him! Number 34?! You bastards! I’ll get you for this! I swear! You’ll PAAAAYYYYYY!!!!!!!

World’s Best Hero: Koichi Haimawari Rally [My Hero Academia]

Did you know there’s an event currently happening to pick the best hero in the My Hero Academia Universe? Of course you do. Just like I’m sure you’ve been voting for Koichi Haimawari/Skycrawler EVERY SINGLE DAY.

Let me tell you wonder folks something. Skycrawler is the best hero in My Hero Academia and My Hero Vigilantes. He spent years out on the mean streets using his quirk to help people like you and me. And he did it without a hero license. He didn’t care that he could be arrested for vigilantism. He’s just a nice guy from a small town who does the right thing because it’s right.

Do you know who’s currently number one in the poll? Katsuki Bakugo. You think Katsuki Bakugo would risk jail to to help someone without a hero license? No. He doesn’t care about the little guy. All he cares is taking down the big bad villains. The Instant Villains? Small-time crooks? Nah. He’s all about the All For One’s and the Shigaraki’s. We don’t need a hero who doesn’t look out for the little guy!

Plus, Katsuki Bakugo is weird. He’s always yelling at people and blowing things up. Heck, his hero name is Great Explosion Murder God Dynamight. Who in their right mind is proud calling themself a “murder god”?! Weird I tell you. Just weird.

Earth’s Mightiest Heroes [My Hero Academia 430] [Finale]

We Are Here…at the end.

It’s the end, Y’all. Or, at least, an end. Will we see a My Hero Academia sequel one day? A continuation of My Hero Vigilantes? More My Hero movies in the future? Maybe. But for now, we’ll focus on the end of this era. The end of My Hero Academia.

Let’s take the scenic route, shall we? I’d like to give my thoughts as I read through the chapter, touching upon anything and everything that comes to mind.

Nice color spread. The final time we’ll see all of Class 2-A drawn together in color, which explains why Aoyama is there along with a visible Hagakure.

Yep. There’s a time skip. Not much of a surprise. The only question was how far Kōhei Horikoshi would jump the story along. Another expected surprise is Kota becoming an U.A. student. But, look what we have here? The Mysterious Boy is also a student! I love it! This is the beginning of Horikoshi giving us a taste of what’s been going on without diving into details. He’s letting our imagination do the hard lifting, which is fine. Every single details doesn’t have to be explained. We can infer what happened or simply wait for those stories to be told one day. Welcome to the world of a time skip ending. You’ll get used to it, kid.

Kamui Woods x Mt. Lady. Gran Torino x Recovery Girl. Deku x Melissa. Tentacole x Sugar Daddy. Shippers eatin’ good today.

Izuku Midoriya’s a hero course teacher! I never really thought about Deku’s career path after losing One For All. Him becoming a teacher makes sense. It’s interesting that Deku is monologuing the lessons he learned at age seventeen. Didn’t he defeat All For One when he was sixteen? Hmm… An error, maybe?

Deku’s writing. Remember: The manga was always framed in a way where Deku’s talking about events like they had already happened. Looks like Horikoshi is bookending the series with us seeing Deku writing about the events he’s talked about since Chapter One.

A Helping Hand [My Hero Academia 429]

Never underestimate the power of kindness.

It’s not just something awful happening. It’s the feeling no one else cares what you’re going through that also hurts. Being alone when the going gets tough is something I wouldn’t wish on almost anyone. Looking at you, Bluegeek.

Which brings me to Ochaco Uraraka and the Mysterious Boy. Both of them going through a difficult time. Both of them in need of someone who cares. I’ve come down on Horikoshi at times, but I absolutely praise the man for not only showing his characters saving the world but wanting to improve society itself.

They can finally catch up on watching The Bear and House of the Dragon.

Uraraka got bogged down by thoughts of the world passing Himiko Toga by, and therefore, wouldn’t care about her feelings about the dead villain. Mystery Boy was about to lash out at a world he thought passed him by as he suffered alone for years. Just the sheer act of empathy from Class 2-A and the Old Lady changed their lives forever. Will empathy prevent all future crime and sadness? No. But it will lessen it to a degree, and in turn, make the world a better place to live in.

Construction Junction, What’s Your Malfunction? [My Hero Academia 428]

Is this the calm before the final storm?

This was a surprising light hearted, slice-of-life chapter—mostly. I love seeing Class 2-A interacting with each other both in classroom and on a “mission” while just being friends. Shinso fits naturally into their dynamic along with a calmer Bakugo so much it makes me sad we won’t see much more of it soon.

What’s the lesson that’s coming? Uraraka’s sad over Toga despite the country coming together to rebuild. Deku’s also thinking about what that jackass Spinner told him before. Hmm… Could the takeaway here be not forgetting the past? Maybe the world according to Deku and Uraraka currently seems to have or want to forget about Toga and the League of Villains and moved on. But doing so will also erase what lead those villains down a dark path and ignore the problems which lead to those said paths. Basically, if you forget the past, you’re doomed to repeat it. And that, my friends, is a big no-no.

Raise your hand if you had to look up what convalescing means?

J. R. R. Spinner [My Hero Academia 427]

Spinner’s writing a book. Hope he finishes it before his execution.

It wasn’t stated in the chapter but Spinner’s on death row, right? The dude was a prominent member of the group that almost destroyed Japan. At the very least, he’s getting life in prison with no chance of Hulu.

I do like the juxtaposing of the chapter being about Tomura Shigaraki’s best friend while showing bits of a Shigaraki’s exposé broadcast. The public doesn’t know much about him, so I guess Spinner’s future book on the guy is gonna be a bestseller. I wonder if Spinner can get Mr. Compress to narrate the audiobook version?

Before I go further, let me just say that I like Spinner as a character. His intentions were good joining the League of Villains, but he quickly got swallowed up by the desires and charisma of very bad, very powerful people. All of that said… Screw you, Spinner!

Yes, and I love strawberry cheesecake with ice cream on top. Just because you like something doesn’t mean it’s good for you or right.

This motherforker had the gall to call out Deku for killing Shigaraki like it he was the bad guy. What. The. Hell?! I get Shiggy was your best bud and Player-Two in your gaming sessions. I get it. But don’t forget Spinner… You best friend…is a MASS MURDERER. He personally killed people, destroyed property resulting in deaths, and lead an organization whose followers killed and injured people. F*ck you. Seriously, f*ck you! You should be on your knees thanking whatever entity you worship I wasn’t there in Deku’s place. If you had said that to me I would’ve shoved my last ember of One For All right up your ass!

Okie Dokie Todoroki [My Hero Academia 426]

The Todoroki Saga comes to an end.

With news My Hero Academia is ending in August, we begin the farewell tour with the Todoroki Family. Dabi’s dying, but this time it’s for real. I love that final interaction between him and the rest of the family. It’s even more impactful knowing that scene will be the final time the entire Todoroki fam is together in one place.

That’s right, Y’all. Natsuo’s going no contact on daddy Endeavor. Did you also notice Natsuo was the only family member who didn’t speak to Toya? Yeah, I don’t think Natsuo’s visiting Toya again. I get the vibe he just went there to support the others that one time. Natsuo seems to be over it all. He’s done with the drama and just wants to live a happy normal life with his soon-to-be wife and the less crappy members of his family. I respect that. Bravo to Horikoshi for giving us a more realistic ending instead of a typical happily ever after scenario.

Every member of the Todoroki family carries scars, physical and emotional. And platinum credit cards. Posh drama is best drama.

Natsuo’s getting married without having a ceremony. Fuyumi quit her job as a teacher. I wonder if that’s because Japan is in a state of restoration and rebuilding or because they’re getting backlash over being related to a prominent member of the League of Villains? I’m not a Japanese culture expect, but from what I think I understand, being related to a criminal in Japan can damage a family’s reputation. Basically, people blame the family for the actions of one. Is than another reason Natsuo’s distancing himself from Endeavor? Is it also another reason Fire Daddy’s spending his retirement taking full responsibility for Toya’s behavior? To protect his other children? Hmm…

Kōhei Horikoshi Interview – What’s Next For My Hero Academia? [Meet the Geek]

It’s an honor to once again interview the popular mangaka, Kōhei Horikoshi. We sat down at an undisclosed location to discuss the future of his hit manga, My Hero Academia.

Thank you for agreeing to sit with us once again, Horikoshi-sensei.

Horikoshi: This is some good fried chicken. You gonna eat those biscuits?

No. Enjoy. We’re officially in My Hero Academia’s epilogue. Tell us, how much longer until the series ends?

Horikoshi: I promise I’ll finish it this year, I think. Depends.

On what?

Horikoshi: Well, I still haven’t decided exactly on how the series will end.

Can I suggest Deku meeting Koichi. Just kidding!

Horikoshi: Who?

Uh, Koichi Haimawari. The main character from My Hero Vigilantes.

Horikoshi: …

You drew him in a recent chapter.

Horikoshi: If you say so.

What about Deku’s father? Fans are looking forward to seeing him. Any hints when he’ll make his appearance?

Horikoshi: Oh! I forgot about him. Guess I’ll have to cobble something together. But, I’m confident I can still finish the series by the end of the year.

What are the chances of Deku forming a hero team to combat crime at the end of the series?

Horikoshi: That’s a good idea. Maybe something like the Avengers or the Rebel Alliance from Star Wars.

Star Wars Rebels aren’t superheroes.

Horikoshi: Luke Skywalker. Ahsoka Tano. Erza Bridger. Cal Kestis. R2D—

Okay. Okay. You’re right. Who is that mysterious barefoot kid in the latest chapter?

Horikoshi: If I tell I’ll have to kill you.

*Laughs* Good one.

Horikoshi: Technically, Shonen Jump’s black ops squad will kill you. Shueisha… is ALWAYS watching.

Will there be a My Hero Academia sequel?

Horikoshi: If I ever get around to it. I want to enjoy myself before deciding to do another series. I could just plot it though. I’m thinking aliens from space attack wanting to add Earth to their evil empire. That sounds fun.

Seriously?

Horikoshi: No.

Come on, Horikoshi-sensei. What’s really gonna happen at the end of the series. Just one hint, please.

Horikoshi: Okay. You know how Deku only carries an ember of One For All? See, he’s going to—got any honey mustard?

After learning the establishment ran out of honey mustard, Horikoshi abruptly ended the interview and left to get ice cream. Thank you for your time, Horikoshi-sensei.

Super Sophomores [My Hero Academia 425]

Congratulations to U.A.’s graduating Class of 2… Um, what year is it exactly in the story?

Class 1-A has officially graduated! Say hello to Hero Course Class 2-A! They grow up so fast, don’t they? Of course, if it were up to me I’d have My Hero Academia last through their entire stay in high school. What I wouldn’t change is Aoyama leaving U.A. Look, you did good, Aoyama. You helped saved the day. But, Shinso deserves a spot in the hero class, and frankly, I’m still a little butt hurt there weren’t long lasting consequences for your betrayal. If this and a slap on the wrist is all you get, fine. I can live with that and wish you all the best. Goodbye and good luck!

And don’t let the door hit you on the way out.

Welcome to Class 2-A, Shinso! It’s been a long time coming. Gotta say, I’m shocked Bakugo’s back at school so soon and even more shocked at how calm he is when he choses to be. Either that, or the medical marijuana is kicking in.

They went all out. Even got Snoop Dogg as a guest rapper/speaker.
