Well, Excuse Me, Princess! [One Piece 1173]

Can’t have an One Piece arc these days without having to save a princess. Huh, Oda?

A young woman with blue hair and no pants. Imu really has a thing for that type of lover. Or, should I say sex slave? Or are we going to believe an evil bastard like Imu isn’t gonna take advantage of a young brainwashed woman? Imu Epstein aside, looks like we’re getting another damsel-in-distress princess for the Straw Hats to save.

And, with that to look forward to, we’ll soon see someone with a deep-sea contract freed from Imu’s control. Will that come with a side of Shuri/Brook backstory? Probably. And don’t even think about Shuri not being redeemed for all of her brainwashed shenanigans for dessert. What? Did you really think Gunko (a woman who’s NOT a mom in a flashback) was gonna die? In One Piece? Ha!

Who knew Hajrudin and Stansen were so petty. They should change their group name to The New Butthutt Pirates.

So, Zoro’s big-brained plan was just attacking from above. Simple, yet effective. Not exactly worthy of being hyped-up last chapter, but it’s a weekly series. Every chapter can’t end on a cliffhanger that pays off. See, Oda? I can be understanding, sometimes.

Last Time On… [One Piece 1172]

Flashback’s over. Let’s get back to the Straw Hats!

…A recap chapter!? NOOOOO!

Guess I’ll touch on the non-recappy parts, like Chief Jarul finally coming (somewhat) clean about what went down in Aurust Castle fourteen years ago. I still think it was a dumb decision to stay quiet, but I like Jarul going with keeping the secret in order to prevent a losing war against the World Government as a valid reason. That makes more sense than the B.S. reasons Loki was spewing out in the flashback.

Zoro has a plan. Well, I’ve got one too: Burn down the boats! No boats. No trips off Elbaph. That could be Zoro’s plan too. Either that, or just cutting Branch 8 so the kids can’t reach the harbor. Oh Zoro! I’m—erm—I mean YOU are such a genius! And mad cute too! ♥

So who’s gonna do what? Prediction time!

Wait. You said three enemies or Mr. 3? Sorry, I’m listening to Beck’s new album.

God Valley Goodbye [One Piece 1166]

Settle down, children! Class is in session!

Can anyone tell me the purpose of the God Valley Incident?

Answer: Setup.

The Rocks Pirates’ reason for going and their break-up, mostly meaningless. Just a means to an end. That end is, of course, being How To Take Down The World Government (and Imu).

Joyboy took his shot and missed. Rocks, a decendent of Davy D. Jones, never got to see his plans fully go to fruition before dying. BUT, in doing so, allowed his son, Blackbeard, to survive and give it the ole Davy try in the present. And while Blackbeard isn’t ready to destroy the World Government, he’s well on his way! He’s got the crew, the darkness-darkness fruit, and someone willing to spill the beans on Pluton’s hidden location beneath Wano.

What’s left for Blackbeard to do before giving the World Government the D. Clan boot? Finding the One Piece! Whatever’s on Laugh Tale may be the key to ultimately destroying the WG and Blackbeard needs it! That and some Eternal Flame to power Pluton. What? You think it’s gonna run on AA batteries? But that’s a discussion for another time.

If only Garling hadn’t brought that paper mache sword, he never would’ve beaten Rocks.

So, Rocks is dead, but we learned Imu’s Domi Reversi curse can be reversed with enough haki. I smell a Luffy and Loki team-up against Imu!

Oda skipped a scene showing Rayleigh and Gaban saving Roger and Garp from God’s Knights. Why? Heck if I know. Probably to hide Gaban’s knowledge that Supreme King haki infused attacks affects the Knights ability to regenerate. Absolutely unnecessary. Every fricking thing doesn’t need to be hidden up to the last second, Oda!

The Roger Pirates find Baby Shanks inside of a treasure chest. I guess his full name’s printed on his clothes somewhere. Hey, mom had to tell him and Shamrock apart someway.

The Devil Went Down to God Valley [One Piece 1162]

King Imu VS Rocks Pirates is happening!

Well, Imu & Saturn VS Davy Tennant D. Xebec, Edward Newgate, and Kaido Smith to be more accurate. But that fight’s setup at the very end. Let’s talk about what happened elsewhere in this chapter.

…Not much.

Seriously. Just a lot of running around and off-screen battles. If I didn’t read this for free, I’d demand my money back and a free pumpkin spice latte!

…Um, Garp finally noticed the hundreds of dead civilian bodies spread across the island. I guess that’s the reason he decided not to be a Navy Admiral, as to not be directly under the Celestial Dragons’ control. Great idea, Garp! Too bad entire civilizations on unaffiliated World Government islands are still dying in Human Hunts and you’re basically letting it happen. But, it’s okay, Y’all. Because even though Garp’s complacent, he feels bad about all the mass murdering and genocide. Ugh!

The Rocks Pirate joining the “No Kings” protest.

There’s still the chance Garp is the one who creates SWORD but again, what’s his endgame?

Guess What? Genocide Is Evil [One Piece 1160]

Reading this chapter, I couldn’t stop thinking about Gaza, The Democratic Republic of Congo, and other places in our world where genocide is currently happening.

Because of that, was the toughest chapter of One Piece to get through.

Ah, screw it! No review today, kids. I’m just not up to it. Here, watch this video from an interesting One Piece YouTuber I recently discovered. Redgeek, out.

Helluva Boss [One Piece 1150]

Okay… So the final villain is The Devil.

Not exactly the most unique Big Bad we’ve seen, right? Look, let’s be honest here: Imu’s basic. Really basic. Let’s go down the evil trope checklist.

  • Devil Wings
  • Pitchfork
  • Pentagram
  • Spooky Magic Book
  • Dressed In All Black
  • No Pants

This is who’s supposed to be the final villain of the series? This boring caricature of pure evil? Yes. Evil. Because he/she literally says “Evil”. So much for subtlety.

Does Imu’s Satan schtick recontextualize Luffy into God? Or, at the very least, the living embodiment of good? Nika’s always laughing. Pure Happiness VS Pure Evil. Is that what One Piece is heading toward? Sure, there’s nothing wrong with that. Good VS Evil is a classic storytelling theme. But! Luffy’s goofy cartoon Nika form’s getting stale and Imu’s so dang darn boring that for the first time ever… I’m not looking forward to the end of One Piece!

Undead-beat Dad [One Piece 1149]

It’s the skeleton guy who turns out to be a DEADbeat dad. Should’ve seen that coming.

Brook was a Celestial Dragon?! Gunko’s his daughter?! What the heck’s going on here? Well, besides Oda giving us an entry into the Celestial Dragon’s backstory. Honestly, I’ve never thought about Brook’s pre-pirate life. I just assumed he was from the same Blue as his previous pirate captain, Yorki. Sorry, Usopp fan(s), your bud’s arc just got hijacked by the Soul King.

Maybe I should’ve seen something like this happening. Gunko’s a woman. And we all know by now Oda goes light on women fighting seriously. And that’s on the small occasions when they do. Nami and Robin’s too weak to pull off a believable win against Gunko, so instead we get a possible redemption arc for our no pants faux god.

I heard Gunko’s Mom is also a living skeleton named Kate Moss.

Not only can King Imu communicate with those who (I assume) he lent his immortality power to, but he can control their bodies when necessary. There’s no leaving Imu’s Gang. You get in, you in for life!

Game of Thorns [One Piece 1148]

You mess with Ron(ja) of us, you mess with all of us!

No, not Ronja! Her positivity in the face of death is heartwarming. She’s, by far, one of my favorite Elbaph characters in this arc just from this chapter alone. Prediction time: Sanji saves Ronja. Either him or Spider-Man. Hasn’t Disney bought Shonen Jump already? No? Sanji it is then.

Finally! We have a possible weakness to the Celestial Dragons’ immortality: Conqueror’s Haki. Geez! Is there anything haki can’t do? I’m positive my dentist used haki to pull out my wisdom teeth. Wish I could haki away her invoice.

And the museum, and the gym, and that over-priced Starbucks that never gets my name right!

Momma Mia [One Piece 1147]

An authoritarian government invades a sovereign nation, forcing its citizens to work for them as slaves while destroying their places of knowledge to keep them ignorant and easier to control.

Thank goodness One Piece is fictional and that type of thing never happens in the real world.

The Celestial Dragons have got the whole conquering other nations role down pact, huh? Guess they’d had plenty of practice. Elbaph’s school and library are in danger of being destroyed. Something tells me Loki also wouldn’t mind if those two buildings were burned down. Protecting them is gonna become just as important as rescuing the kidnapped children. Mark my words!

Glad Robin’s gonna fight Sommers, but she’s at a huge disadvantage fighting someone with thorn powers. Maybe her and Chopper can pull off a win. Guard Point’s pretty durable. Then again, someone’s gotta save the kids, so I guess that’s gonna be Chopper. Just kick the little brats away with Monster Point and pray they don’t tattle.

Get To The Point [One Piece 1146]

The Celestial Dragons are gearing up for the final war!

After Dr. Vegapunk Stella revealed a secret group wanting to destroy the world, Monkey D. Dragon and the rest of the Revolutionary Army begin perparing for all-out war against the World Government. Turns out, the Celestial Dragons are doing the exact same thing.

Going by what Gunko and Sommers said in this chapter, they want Elbaph’s warriors on their side during the inevitable final battle, whether Warland’s citizens want to or not. Hence, why the Holy Knights are kidnapping Elbaph’s kids. Just take the kids as hostages and Elbaph’s adults will do whatever the Celestial Dragons want. Simple, yet effective. Also evil. Very VERY evil.

This all confirms most, if not all, Celestial Dragons with higher status know the truth about the world. Or, at least, they know enough that they have to work to maintain their godly status and that the world will indeed be flooded at some point. And, they need to make sure it happens, no matter what.

And that’s why its rude to point at people, kids.
