Is Eri Getting Professional Counseling for Her Trauma? [My Hero Academia 217]

Sure, a safe home environment and caring older brother types are nice, but a little Zoloft wouldn’t hurt.

217a
Maybe. Tune into the Prison Break Arc next time and find out!

It’s not the quirk, it’s how you use it.

That’s the theme of this chapter. Bakugo doesn’t sugarcoat his thoughts saying One For All is basically like All For One. Makes sense because OFA helped create it, but that’s just the stockpile aspect of the quirk. The First One For All User’s original quirk was the ability to pass down quirks, meaning, Deku getting the past user’s quirks is because of him. But, why did it take so long? Is it because a person’s body had to be strong enough to handle multiple quirks? If so, that means the stockpile part given by AFO made that happen. Phew! Long story short, All For One and One For All are more alike than everyone originally thought. There. Everyone caught up? No? We’re moving on anyway.

Class A and B are having a dinner get together. Mineta is strapped in a chair and forced to watch Crazy Ex-Girlfriend, Xena Warrior Princess, and Buffy the Vampire Slayer. Lucky Bastard. Also, we have a brief moment with Todoroki who decides its time he mastered his fire powers and texts Endeavor to teach him how to perform Flashfire. So, um, who’s gonna teach Todoroki how to master his ice half?

And the Winner Is… Shinso [My Hero Academia 216]

Hm. Shinso’s joining the Hero Course in the second semester. So, does that mean the traitor will be revealed before then?

216a
It’s okay, buddy. You’ll get ’em next time. Now, can you lend me $50? I lost mine betting on your sorry butt.

It’s not like anyone’s getting booted out the Hero Course to make room. Sure, Shinso said it could happen, but storywise I don’t see Hori doing that. I’d be a real dick move on his part. So, no, Shinso’s taking over the traitor’s spot. Start the clock on that. Well, it’ll probably be another year at least before the students hit Year 2 but you get my drift.

Deku explained what happened honestly, nice. And, then everyone called bull shit and he was forced to… What? That didn’t happen? Oh, yeah. That’s right. Everyone just accepted that a guy with a glass cannon super strength quirk can now materialize black tentacles. Whatever. I just hope Aizawa takes Toshinori aside when they’re alone and demands he spill the beans about him, Deku, and Deku’s quirk. I swear, if Aizawa doesn’t I’ll lose all respect for him. He’s smarter than to take Deku’s excuse at face value.

Here’s a question: Who is this?

216aa

It’s not Aizawa, Toshinori (I think), or Endeavor if we’re going by his hair. The other guy looks like Present Mic so what’s going on? Who did Aizawa know back in his UA high school student days? And, why does this person matter now? Hm.

Uraraka Wrecks ‘Em [My Hero Academia 215]

Did you see that? I’m not dreaming, right? Uraraka kicked ass!

215a
Uraraka VS Indoor Plumbing

She protected Deku last chapter and now Uraraka is on the warpath. First, she hauls Monoma to jail, making sure not to fall for his mind games. And, sidenote, I do feel bad for Monoma. He’s a jerk, but he’s a caring jerk. Anyway, back to Uravity, after taking care of Monoma, she goes to the battlefield and lays the beatdown on Yanagi AND Kodai. That’s three Class B students down. Oh, no! But, what about Shoda? What will Class A do? No, wait, Mina’s got it covered. One Punch is all it takes and Shoda’s down for the count. I think. This could all be a misdirect, but for now, I’m counting this match as over.

Now Watch Me Whip (Nae Nae Sold Separately) [My Hero Academia 214]

Nah uh! Don’t even try it, Deku.

214cww00

No, I’m not talking about Deku activating Blackwhip. That’s fine. What I DO have a problem with is our main character mastering the damn move on the second try. Come on!

No. No. Wait. I’m jumping the gun here. I’m sure that was only your standard manga cliff hanger. Next chapter, we’ll see how Deku fairs against Shinso, whip to whip. I mean, there’s no way Deku’s willing that fight. We were reminded how hard Shinso practiced Aizawa’s techniques. To have Deku mosey along and outclass him would be a slap in the face. So, I’m officially calling I Don’t Think So on Midoriya (and Class A) getting the win.

Ménage à Quirk [My Hero Academia 213]

It makes sense. One For All=Quirk that passes quirks+Stockpiling quirk.

213a
Deku’s got “webbing”. Next quirk is “Sticky Feet”, then “Hero Sense”.

The previous users simply assumed that meant only strength. Wrong! Turns out One For All passes the previous users will and quirks too. Do I have a problem with that? No. I don’t.

Okay, I get it. Some of you out there don’t like where this is going. Deku’s already powerful enough, right? He’s gonna be this one-man wrecking crew just like Naruto or Ichigo from Bleach, right? While I agree those things happening would suck, I don’t think Horikoshi’s going down that road (at least, I hope he isn’t). Here’s why.

I believe at its core One For All is about raising a person’s physical abilities. Deku’s physical strength will always be at the forefront, with his tactics a close second. The extra quirks will be to Deku what the utility belt is to Batman. The belt helps Batman in his crusade against evil but he’s never overshadowed by it. It allows Batman to do his job better. Does he need it? No. But, he’d be way less effective without it. That’s what I think Deku’s other quirks will do. We even get a hint in this very chapter. Blackwhip came out when Deku wanted to capture Monoma. Sure, if it gets out of control, Blackwhip is monstrous, but that’s not its primary function. It’s basically a lasso. A lasso Deku can use to capture criminals. A tool in his fight against evil. Just like his shoes. Just like his air gloves.  Deku’s not overpowered, he’s gaining new ways to do his job.

Uraraka Reboot? [My Hero Academia 212]

Me thinks this and last chapter were supposed to be one full chapter, ye fellow readers.

212a
Uraraka couldn’t find a mic, so she dropped the hat instead.

What’s there to say? Not much happened.

We get a Uraraka flashback that explains why she wants to become a hero. But, it was already established she did so to financially support her parents. Did Horikoshi screw up? Maybe. Giving him the benefit of the doubt, people can and do have more than one reason why they do things. But, that being said, the flashback would’ve been less rebooty if he mentioned her wanting the money too. Perhaps say she needed a high paying job and picked being a hero because it makes people happy. Bam! Less confusing. Then again, I think something’s up with Hori. The guy is either bone tired from working on a side project like the next MHA movie or something similar.

Meet the Geek: Kohei Horikoshi [Why Are My Hero Academia Chapters Shorter?]

hirokoshi00

Welcome. Redgeek, here. It’s time we learned the truth. Kohei Horikoshi has been turning out shorter chapters for months and I want answers! I had a chance to sit down with Horikoshi-sensei at his office for another exclusive interview.

RG: Been awhile, Horikoshi. *stares*

Horikoshi: W-what are you doing?

RG: Checking for signs of exhaustion. Have you been sleeping okay?

Horikoshi: Oh, yeah, yeah. Four hours every night. That’s plenty.

RG: Um, that’s not good at all.

Horikoshi: Relatively speaking. Black Clover’s creator (Yūki Tabata) only gets three hours.

RG: That explains why it’s so bad.

Horikoshi: Hey! Don’t be rude. *cough cough*

RG: Whoa. Are you sick?

Horikoshi: Well, just a little. Had a cold a few months back, then the flu last month. I caught something else recently.

RG: Allergies?

Horikoshi: No, stairs.

RG: Huh?

Horikoshi: Fell down them.

RG: That’s horrible. You fell from lack of sleep?

Horikoshi: Lack of speed. Togashi-sensei (Hunter X Hunter creator) was rushing out Shueisha to buy Smash Bros. Special and I didn’t dodge out his way in time.

RG: I see. But, why were you at Shueisha? I thought editors picked up your work at your office.

Horikoshi: I had a meeting. It’s embarrassing to admit but I got busted for drug possession.

RG: What?

Horikoshi: No, no! It’s not as bad as it sounds. A fan sent me some homemade cookies and apparently they had a little something extra.

RG: So, you got high?

Horikoshi: …Yeah. According to the police, I was picked up on a bike on my way to Tokyo Disney. It wasn’t my bike. But, it’s cool. Oda-sensei put in a good word for me at the station. Everything was smoothed out quick. The police there loves One Piece. A couple future spoilers and an ecchi Nami picture and I was a free man.

RG: What a nice guy.

Horikoshi: You bet! He even offered to take the rest of those drug cookies off my hands. In fact, he insisted. Even demanded I mail him any more stuff like that straight to him.

RG: A saint. A true saint.

Horikoshi: Of course, now I have to fix my last couple chapters. See, I had this huge Uraraka and Mina fight planned out but I accidentally forgot it when I was high.

RG: Oh, no.

Horikoshi: Sorry about that. Don’t worry I’m getting back on track.

RG: Well, I certainly never expected all this happened. Now, I see why chapters have been so short. I hope everything’s good now.

Horikoshi: Sorry to make you worry. I’m ready to turn out full-length chapters from now on. Right after I stop the upcoming demon apocalypse.

RG: WHAT?

Horikoshi: It’s okay. I have a sword. Well, a sword replica but it’ll all work out. Speaking of work, better finish this chapter before I take on the armies of hell. If you’ll excuse me.

RG: …Sure. Thank you, Horikoshi. See ya.

Horikoshi: Not if the world gets eaten by Death incarnate. *laughs*

RG: I think I need some cookies.

Venom? [My Hero Academia 211]

Can someone please put Hirokoshi on Oda’s auto-break schedule? The guy needs a nap.

211a
Monoma keeping it real. There’s a complicated human under all that insecurity. He just may be my most reliable character in the series. …I need a hug.

He’s been chucking out short chapters for a while now. Poor guy. I hope he’s enjoying a relaxing Christmas eating buckets of KFC in his underwear. You deserve it Hirokoshi-sensei.

On to the chapter. We get a brief moment between Monoma and Shinso about having to play the villain in order to use their quirks effectively. Not all heroes wear capes, and not all heroes lower the toilet seat after use either, I guess.

Deku.

All For One is going out of control, black tentacles are attacking everyone in sight. Interesting enough, we see the eyes of a previous All For One user. I think it’s Shimura’s teacher, the man with the goggles. Could that be a clue the tentacles were his original quirk? It’s not like the previous users were evil (at least going by what we know), so whatever’s happening isn’t meant to be malicious. This could all be growing pains.

One For All Stockpiles Skills? [My Hero Academia 210]

I wanna talk about Deku’s quirk, so let’s get everything else out the way.

210a
He’s an asshole. But, he’s an asshole with style.

No. Uraraka and Mina won’t get standout moments this fight, and that sucks.

Yes. Monoma is a dick.

No. I don’t know if Shimura became a hero before or after she received OFA, but I’d like to know.

Yes. I completely understand Shoda’s Twin Impact quirk.

No. I wasn’t being serious. I’m confused as all hell about it. Does he punch something then can later Jedi force punch it again? I don’t get it.

Yes. I think Monoma has Shinsou’s quirk.

No. I don’t think Class A is blitzing Team Monoma like Bakugo’s group did.

Yes. Everyone has no excuse not reading the official English translation because its free now. But, I still get chapter pics from scanlations because I don’t know how to save Viz pics on my computer.

Now that that’s out the way, let’s talk about One for All!

Match-o No. 5 (A Little Bit of…) [My Hero Academia 209]

Bakugo’s a good friend, Toshinori?

209a
Can someone please tell Bakugo this crap is getting old? Or, at least punch him in the face.

The asshole still has apologized for bullying Deku for years. Just sayin’.

Match 4 is over and everyone’s on Bakugo’s nuts, er, grenades. We get a more confident Deku, standing up to Bakugo and proclaiming their team will win. He’s being a true leader now, not just with brains, but he’s inspiring his group. My baby Deku has grown up. *cries*

Class B is trying to form a plan against Class A, namely, Deku. He’s their key to victory, after all. Good on Shinso for mentioning Deku once broke his brainwashing. They’ll have to do more than that to be him. Also interesting that Monoma cautioned Shinso not to rely on him. What does that mean? You’d think he’d want to attack with some double brainwash maneuver, but no. Hmm.
