Stain or Stendhal? [My Hero Academia 300]

Three-hundred chapters, y’all! Congratulations, Horikoshi! May you never get kicked into a pit by a guy screaming about Sparta.

Time to cut the cheese!

Yoroi Musha, the #9 hero quit. Oh, excuse me! Retired. Yep, like the narrator said, this will open the floodgates for any other hero having second thoughts to pack it up. And remember, the manga hasn’t addressed hero students quitting yet. Keep an eye out for that! I don’t see anyone from Class A quitting. Maybe one or two from Class B, but that’s a BIG maybe. Most likely other unnamed students from UA will transfer out the famed hero school.

Wash has gotta be a cyborg. Why am I the only one talking about it?! And, if I’m right, was their cybernetics created by the same person who built the advanced medical equipment at Central Hospital? I guess when that person’s revealed we’ll get more answers.

Civilians are fighting back. They kinda have too given the current situation. Many heroes are dead or injured. More are quitting. And others are trying to recapture escaped prisoners. And, with the Hero Safety Commission in disarray, it’s just a chaotic time. Not just escaped convicts, but any gang or criminal is gonna take full advantage of the situation. So, what does all this mean? It’s simple…

The return of vigilantism.

Free As A Bird [My Hero Academia 299]

Hawks is back and ready to attack…public opinion.

Got some more backstory on Hawks. Nice! Interesting seeing the number two hero up and about so soon. That Central Hospital is great, huh? More on that later. For now, let’s talk about all the other points of interest this chapter sparked in my fat, squishy head.

Did you notice Hawks’ father, Takami, had feathers on his arms? Also, Takami wanted to use his wife’s (Tomie) quirk to make money. Hmm… I’m guessing with the floating eyeballs and repeating “Don’t leave” to Takami that Tomie has some sort of clairvoyance quirk (The don’t leave referring to him leaving the house and eventually getting captured by Endeavor.). Clairvoyance + Feathers = Fierce Wings. Makes sense to me.

Rumor has it Best Jeanist bought his car at Bruce Wayne’s garage sale.

How did Dabi find Tomie? Did he ask Skeptic to pry into Hero Safety Commission records? Maybe. I can’t think of any other reason. Speaking of the HSC. What exactly are they doing in this current hero public relations nightmare? Hawks implied the chairwoman is too injured or dead to give him orders. Is the rest of the commission sitting on their hands? Time to step up, Mera!

♫You Know You Make Me Breakout…Of Prison♫ [My Hero Academia 298]

Hahahaha! Oh, All For One. You sneaky mothertrucker.

Yeah, I have that same problem with YouTube unsubscribing channels I follow. Just hit the notification bell, Spinner.

That’s right my fellow My Hero fans. Instead of one prison breakout, we got seven. That’s a lot of chaos distracting the authorities, all the while keeping the tippy-top most powerful criminals from Tartarus close as AFO’s new goon squad (Note that none of the feature convicts from last chapter are seen attacking other prisons.). Or, maybe the better term is army. Hmm…

But wait! Seven other prisons were attacked but only six had additional convicts escaping. What could that mean, you ask? Well, I think the guards from that last prison may have gotten some unexpected help from a few notable detainees: Rappa, Gentle, and La Brava!

Tartar Sauce [My Hero Academia 297]

No super long Tartarus Arc for us, huh? That’s fine. Just give me the prisoners.

Giant robots VS Nomu. Yes, please!

This ain’t One Piece. There’s no Impel Down Arc happening in My Hero Academia. And, who wants to see that anyway? I didn’t wanna see Pro Hero level guards with licenses to kill attacking prisoners. Or, a couple super advanced Ultron like robots defending the perimeter. Or, even the prison itself being littered with death traps like gas or acid or spikes. Nope, didn’t want to see any of that…

Okay, maybe a little. BUT, at least we got a bunch of powerful villains escaping who are ready to put the final nail in society’s coffin. Let’s breakdown all the prisoners of interest.

All For One (OG Version)– The guy’s got ambition I’ll give him that. Wants to be the biggest, baddest Demon Lord son of a biscuit ever. And then there’s his talk of an Impeding Void Era. That’s not good, whatever that is. Hm… void. An era without heroes, maybe? Yeah, let’s go with that.

Overhaul. Without his arms he’s not much use to AFO. Not that the guy would follow AFO anyway. He’s gotta somehow fix his Yakuza Boss’s body. On a completely unrelated note: AFO’s original body’s a wreck too. Uh-oh! If AFO steals Overhaul’s quirk he could fix his body. So, even if Shigaraki regains full control of his own sexy half naked body he’ll still have to deal with his old mentor in combat. AFO VS Shigaraki death battle is unofficially a go!

Midnight at the Oasis [My Hero Academia 296]

The Paranormal Liberation Front wanted to destroy the current society. This chapter is a dark reminder they almost succeeded.

Big Thanks to My Hero Academia’s English Translator, Calab Cook, for providing many details about the chapter I missing during my initial reading.

R-Rated Hero: Midnight is dead.

I seriously didn’t think Horikoshi would go there, but here we are. I’m shocked. Really shocked, y’all. I thought he was going for the classic fake-out death. I was wrong. Look, I’m no huge Midnight fan, but I liked her as a character. Especially, after seeing her more informal side in My Hero Vigilantes. We learn how much of a true friend she is to those around her. How she cares for them and is willing to even put her career in jeopardy for them. Midnight was never my favorite character, but she was always a welcomed character. I’m gonna miss her.

Tenacious D [My Hero Academia 295]

Is this it? Are we finally nearing the conclusion to this roller coaster of an arc? I-I think so…

…Unless Horikoshi turns back the clock in order to show us the ENTIRE Re-Destro/Geten VS Gunga Villa Heroes fight. Nah! Maybe we’ll get a snippet or catch the end of it, but no way is Hori ending on that battle after everything that’s happened with Team Deku. That’d be like ending an awesome rock music festival with Justin Bieber. Sure, he’s a big name, but who wants to see that after watching U2, AC/DC, and Foo Fighters play? BTW, I humbly apologize to every Re-Destro and Geten fan for comparing them to Beiber. I hope someday you will forgive me.

Deku has Spidey-Sense Danger Sense. Yep, that happened. I don’t know how I feel about that. I’m not saying it’s overpowered or dumb, just…really unexpected. And, yes, I know Horikoshi is a Spider-Man fan. I just didn’t think he’d give Deku that power. Especially, since he already gave Spider-Deku webbing in the form of Blackwhip. Well, okay… Guess we won’t have to worry about Toga fooling him again.

Alright, so that’s 3 quirks Deku’s got (The Fourth, Fifth, and Seventh Users), not counting One For All. 3 more to go (The Second, Third, and Sixth Users). Hm… Running up walls. I’m calling it now, he’s getting a quirk that’ll give him that ability.

Don’t Mess With Mr. Compress [My Hero Academia 294]

First Dabi and now Mr. Compress. Now, I’m just waiting for Spinner to reveal he’s actually Froppy’s little brother from the future here to get revenge for canceling his favorite TV show.

Stylish hair, shaved armpits, and a refined sense of style. Mr. Compress is 100% metrosexual.

Yep. Mr. Compress is Oji Harima, The Peerless Thief’s descendant. Many people guessed that but that’s how Horikoshi rolls. He loves dropping clues to mysteries. And, it’s not the mystery itself, it’s how the reveal affects the story that’s important. In this instance, we now know Mr. Compress’ motivation for joining the League of Villains: A reformation of society.

We also learned more about Oji Harima. Most of the Robin Hood-ish stuff was first revealed in the second My Hero Academia data book. But, what we didn’t know is Harima targeted “sham heroes” more concerned with getting rich than fighting for justice. Did he kill those heroes? We don’t know. But, I think a major reason why he’s so notorious is more about him defying the new world order. Flawed or not, the Hero System was created to stabilize this chaotic world where quirks are now the norm. It was to give hope and support to the masses and make potential criminals think twice about committing crimes. It’s no wonder the government back then villainized Oji Harima so hard for his actions. It wasn’t about whether he was right or wrong, but about them wanting to establish that system and, most likely, thinking they can always “fix” the cracks later.

Bakugo Wins Again [My Hero Academia 293]

Not only does Katsuki Bakugo win Japan’s recent My Hero Academia Popularity Poll, but his official hero name is revealed. And, that’s not all…

The Top 10 most popular My Hero Academia characters in Japan as well as the Top 10 most likely people to bring their own pillows on vacation.

It’s safe to say Bakugo’s having a great week for someone impaled by Super Shigaraki several chapters ago. #1 in Shonen Jump’s My Hero poll for the fifth time and we learn his hero name is Great Explosion Murder God Dynamight. It’s a dumb name but I’m guessing everyone will just call him Dynamight so just going by that I like it.

There’s another interesting development for Bakugo this chapter: He’s focused on saving people and not winning. Remember, his thing was “fight to win” while Deku was “fight to save”. Well, when attacking the Near High-Ends, Bakugo remembered how powerful his explosions were when saving Deku several chapters earlier. He’s now realized first hand to strength that can be drawn from an intent to save. Sure, Deku has leveled up but Bakugo is right on his heels. Don’t count the overrated brat out yet. He’s still got a lot more room for growth!

We have confirmation Eri did indeed heal Mirio with her Rewind quirk. Good job, Eri! Have fun getting kidnapped. What? I’m just saying Eri’s too powerful even with having to store up power before using her quirk for big projects. She’s way too temping a target for the Paranormal Liberation Front. Especially, with Doctor Ujiko captured by the heroes. If they want erasure bullets they’re gonna need a lab to replicate a bullet or Eri herself.

Terry Crews Returns! [My Hero Academia 292]

This is one hell of a roller coaster!

If you think that’s cool, wait until you see what he does with a jar of Metamucil.

This arc one twist and turn and reveal after another. Now, we’ve got one more: Lemillion is back.

Still no Wash, but we got the next best thing. With Lemillion’s return it’s hard seeing the League doing much to stop him. I would say it’s time for the League of Villains to escape but every time I do something else happens. Could the League actually be captured this arc? Would Horikoshi surprise everyone and go down that route? …Nah! The League’s still endgame enemies. They aren’t getting captured until the final arc.

So, how did Lemillion get his quirk back? Eri, probably. Yeah, no shock there. But, here’s another question: When did she do it? Was it during the time skip by a trained Eri and Mirio kept it secret to surprise everyone? Was it while the battle was going on and Mirio decided to risk getting erased by Eri’s power to save everyone? And, how did he get to Team Deku so fast? I don’t know the answers but this chapter has officially put Eri fixing Deku’s arms on the menu.

Hot Lies and Cold Truths [My Hero Academia 291]

If you do not tell the whole truth, you can mislead people just as if you tell them an outright lie. -proverb

Just look at that ass. No, the other one. No! The other one! I mean Dabi, damn it!

That being said… Bravo, Dabi! You, Sir, have joined Super Shigaraki and Gigantomachia in completely destroying Japan’s absolute trust in their current hero society forever. As if the confession and DNA test wasn’t enough, you recorded Twice’s death! I freaking forgot about you having some sort of device in your possession back at Gunga Villa. Oh, Hori, you lovable scamp. You sure do love dropping clues to future plot reveals. It’s just one of the reasons why I love you (Call me!).

Did you notice that little flashback was in Endeavor’s POV, y’all? That’s right. Hori was nice enough to give us a little taste, but the real meat and potatoes will be shown once we see everything from Toya’s POV. It’ll pick up right after Toya’s fire quirk started hurting him and will, hopefully, include how he survived the fire at Sekoto Peak (No doubt in my mind Toya continued training his quirk in hopes Daddy Endeavor would accept him again.).
