Hipster Hotline: Reboot

Bob00

I don’t how to approach this. Well, let’s start by getting the general stuff out the way.

Reboot is a great series. Sure, the computer animation doesn’t hold up, especially in the first season, but the plot is fantastic. Well, it starts getting really good in the second season. What I’m trying to say is Reboot is original, groundbreaking, and entertaining.

Reboot is the story of a world inside your computer called Mainframe, protected by a Guardian called Bob. He fights you, the user, in video games, and also computer viruses. Oh, boy! Oh, boy! Oh, boy!

*coughcough*

Anyway, like with most Hipster recommendations, it’s all about the story. Reboot is a show not afraid to be funny one episode, serious the next, though mostly it’s funny. Reboot is telling a story, and bad things happen to people, bad people even win sometimes. Things get crazy and our heroes have to handle it. Actions have consequences, weight to them. I’m painting a much darker picture of the show than I think it is but too many kids shows don’t deviate much from a standard formula. Bad things happen and by the end of the episode everything is as it was. Since I was a child I always hated when kid shows treated their audience like idiots. Reboot doesn’t do that. That’s why I love it.

Characters learn, grow, change because of personal experience. And, yeah, the villains seems one-note in the beginning, but they, like Bob, Dot, Enzo and the other regular cast are evolving. It’s amazing how Reboot starts as simply a standard cartoon with a CGI gimmick becoming something more, something its creators slowly build into a complex world full of dangers, we the audience as well as the protagonists, take for granted as minor grievances, but, in reality, are capable of causing great destruction and misery.

“The Night Begins to Shine” (Teen Titans Go)

cyborg00

Teen Titans Go is decent. I remember trying to get into it during its first season and bailed, but I have watched some funny clips and episodes on YouTube since then. It’s a gamble. You may get a funny episode or a clunker. In my opinion, the show is best watched on YouTube where fans post the best moments of the series. Alright, with that out the way, let’s talk about “The Night Begins to Shine”.

“The Night Begins to Shine” is an 80’s rock styled song made in 2005 by a band called B.E.R. It was the focus of an episode about Cyborg’s love of it. Gotta say, he’s not wrong. I like this song. I REALLY like this song. It’s so good I thought it actually was made in the 80s!

I haven’t been this infatuated with a cartoon song since Spongebob Squarepants’ Sweet Victory episode. Well, not counting Futurama’s Robot Hell song, but that’s more for adults. Can’t count anime or kids movies either, I guess. Point is, “The Night Begins to Shine” is a great song if you’re in the mood for 80’s rock. It’s, honestly, too good for Teen Titans Go. Give it a listen and let me know what you think.

Side note: After a little research I learned “The Night Begins to Shine” hit the Billboard charts earlier this year and it was covered by CeeLo Green and Fall Out Boy. Does that still qualify it as hipster? Well, it didn’t hit the Top 20 and I’m recommending the B.E.R. version only, so I’ll allow it.

Hipster Hotline: Power Rangers Hyperforce

power-rangers-hyperforce00

Never thought I’d put anything Power Rangers related on the hotline but here we are. Power Rangers Hyperforce is a Dungeons & Dragons type show on Twitch about five Time Force cadets from the year 3016 on a quest to stop a mysterious organization from causing destruction. All while trying to not screw up the time/space continuum.

I’m no expert D&D player, never played it all actually. My RPGs have all been in video game and book forms. I’m reviewing this from that and a podcasting perspective. It’s a show requiring imagination. If you like Power Rangers and are willing to let your mind’s eyes do the driving, you’re in for a good time.

You can either watch the show live and interact with other members of the audience via the chat room, or, if you don’t subscribe to Hyper RPG, watch the episodes a week later on their YouTube channel. That’s where my podcasting side takes over. Each episode is over two hours long,  so you can watch the video or just listen while doing other things. The creators know this and even have episodes on itunes. Basically, you enjoy the show however you like.

The story is good but it’s helped further by the great cast. Each ranger player is entertaining and able to think on their feet, er, butt, resulting in some good improv. And the show’s GM (Game Master)is good too, but, again, I’m not a D&D expert. Having Paul Schrier (actor who played Bulk in MMPR) as Hyperforce Yellow and the occasional guest ranger from the TV show gives the RPG show cannon street cred, making it genuinely feel part of ranger lore.

If you like D&D, Power Rangers, or podcasts, give Hyperforce a watch/listen. If it stays on track it’ll only get better from here. It’s morphine time! …*sigh* I always get that wrong.

Hipster Hotline: Colorful (anime)

mokoto00

I need a hug.

Colorful is an anime movie released in 2010 about a boy, Makoto Kobayashi, who dies but gets another chance at life inside the body of a boy who committed suicide. With no memories of his previous life, Makoto picks up where the boy left off, seemingly surviving his suicide attempt.

This movie hits close to home. While I never attempted suicide I have thought about it in the past and I certainly been bullied and had an overall lonely school life. It was hard to watch at some points. While not bullied the same way as Makoto, I had my share of bad experiences. But, it wasn’t about the bullying as much as feeling things would never get better. That the normal attitude of most people was constantly set to Uncaring Asshole. Why is the world like this? Why can’t I have a friend? Will things always be this way?

Colorful can’t answer give you solid answers, nothing can. Sometimes things work out, sometimes they don’t, but what the movie does is allow people to see that if you want your life to change, you have to change. A little perspective goes a long way, and if you can focus on being a better you, maybe, something good will happen. It’s not easy, but it is possible.

We learn over the course of the movie about the boy who committed suicide, his family, and why he killed himself. It’s a slow build that keeps you watching, even throwing in some unexpected twists that I won’t even try to touch on. This is a movie best watched knowing the bare minimum. Now, before you dismiss the movie as a bummer fest, there are hopeful moments. You’re rooting for the main character. Yes, the story gets dark, but that means when good things happen it’s that much more meaningful.

Colorful isn’t a movie trying to give advice how to stop bullying. It’s about hope and forgiveness. Life isn’t simple, or maybe it is and we make it complicated, I don’t know. All I know is that this is a great emotional movie deserving of anyone who felt they didn’t belong or just wanted a friend. The highest of recommendations.

Hipster Hotline: Samurai Pizza Cats

SPC00

“What’s that on the ground?”
“Dirt.”

Samurai Pizza Cats will go down in history as the only edited/altered anime fans aren’t upset about. Simple plot, a team of anthropomorphic cats fighting evil while running a pizza shop in downtown Little Tokyo. What made SPC memorable is there unapologetic jokes, puns, and casual destruction of the fourth wall. Even more memorable is most of the humor works. You can tell the writers are having a blast, giving the audience the best lines they can get away with on a kids show. They wrote Samurai Pizza Cats for themselves and I thank them for it.

Even the best written anime needs good voice acting and Samurai Pizza Cats…deliver. Each voice is distinctive and full of life, able to deliv–uh–tell a joke or punch line the perfect way, essentially making even bad jokes land on their feet, heh. I think that’s the show’s secret ingredients, great writing coupled with great voice acting. I don’t think I’ll ever forget any of the main cast voices. They’re that good!

Add all that with the fourth wall annihilating narrator, and the (rumored) drunk theme song singer and you have the recipe for a fun comedy/adventure show ready to eat.

If you’re hunkering for an anime that doesn’t take itself seriously, give Samurai Pizza Cats a watch. It’s stupid for all the right reasons. And, now, I’ll leave you with one of the best quotes in the series, that has to be heard to be fully appreciated, delivered by the great Polly Esther.

“A fully functioning, cybernetic, technologically advanced team of superheroes… and nobody’s got a flashlight?”

Marry me, SPC!

Hipster Hotline: Wakfu – The Animated Series

wakfu01

Ever played a MMORPG called Dofus? It’s sister game, Wakfu? No? Okay, you like shounen anime? Yeah, now we’re on the same page. While Wakfu the show isn’t technically anime, like Avatar: The Last Airbender, it’s pretty much the same with the only difference being it was made outside Japan. Sidenote: Funding Wakfu’s English dub was my very first Kickstarter. I love this series, but strangely I forgot about it until recently. Not entirely strange. I know why, but lets save it for later.

Wakfu is the story of Yugo, an orphan boy living a quiet life until he’s thrust into an adventure that has him traveling the world with a new group of friends trying to save a kingdom from a…science wizard? Yeah, sounds basic but what sets Wakfu apart is style.

First things first, Wakfu is a good looking show. The world is vibrant and the characters look unique. No time is wasted pulling you into the World of Twelve from a visual standpoint. You can tell the show is based on a MMORPG and, yes, that’s a big compliment.

Hipster Hotline: Now and Then, Here and There

NTHT00

Let me take a deep breath. This anime is great, but…look, its been years since I first saw this show and I still remember how hard it hit me. I went in blind thinking this was a typical boy-meets-girl-while-going-on-an-adventure story. No, no, no, there’s a bit more to it.

Our protagonist, Shu, a caring young boy tries to help a girl, Lala-Ru, in trouble. Soon he’s transported to another time and place where…stuff happens. This story doesn’t pull punches. Shu is “interrogated” and at that point I realized this thirteen episode series is not going in the direction I first thought. This series doesn’t shy away from brutality.

Hipster Hotline: Moribito

balsa00

Why am drawn to these stories I may never get to finish? Moribito is an anime based on the first novel of a series about Balsa, a female bodyguard and Chagum, a prince of New Yogo, a country part of the world of humans but closely connected to the world of spirits.

Prince Chagum has a spirit egg inside his body and through certain circumstances (AKA misguided dad) is saved by Balsa, the most bad ass spear wielder since…I don’t know.

*looks up anime spear users*

Geez! Either they have huge boobs or look like ten-years olds. Anyway, Balsa is calm, cool, and not afraid to kick butt if she has to.

Being based off a novel, Moribito doesn’t fall into many typical anime tropes. It’s not fueled by fan service or has the fate of the world at stake. It’s the story of a child prince adjusting to life as a commoner, hiding from his father’s assassins while his protector and her friends try to solve just what the heck is going on with that spirit egg inside him. Adventure, action, mystery—Moribito has it, but at the end of the day, it’s all about the characters.

You care about Balsa and her mission to protect Chagum, both from his father and the spirit egg.  You care about why she became a bodyguard. You care about Chagum, a kid being hunted by his dad’s secret squad and adjusting to everyday life—and not only them. Balsa’s kind-hearted childhood friend, Tanda, the brash old magic weaver, Torogai, even the antagonists are all fully developed characters playing the hero from their point of view. This is a character driven story where you learn why each individual does what they do and the conflicts that follows those decisions. I love it.

I recommend the anime or manga, both retelling the first novel, and both are great. Or, read the original novel and the second book, Guardian of the Darkness (Love it!), officially translated for an English audience. Unfortunately, the later books won’t be getting the same treatment as the publisher decided not to translate them due to low sales.  There is a kind fan translating the third book, Guardian of the Dream, so hope is not lost. Maybe one day English fans will get to read every book in the series.

Moribito is a classic in my eyes. An engaging  fantasy with heart. Anime, manga, novel—don’t matter which you pick, you won’t lose.

Hipster Hotline: Alone (comic)

Alone 1 - 41 copy

Ever stumble across something by chance, a book, song, TV show, etc., and after enjoying it you knew you had to have more? Instant love. It happens to us all, it’s a wonderful feeling. My most recent experience came from a comic book series called Alone, written by Bruno Gazzotti with art by Fabien Vehlmann. From what I gathered it’s originally a French comic with at least ten volumes released. English websites currently have the first seven volumes translated.

Alone is about five children; Dodzi, Leila, Ivan, Camille, and Terry, seemingly the only people left in their entire city. What happened? Where is everyone? What will they do? Questions asked in any post-apocalyptic story but, like with any story, it’s the execution that matters.

No adults here to bail them out. They have to somehow figures thing out on their own. Fortunately, most of them are resourceful. Dodzi, the mature one due to personal circumstances. Leila, a determined tinkerer. Ivan, the lonely rich kid looking for answers. Camille, the model student slowly coming out of her shell. And, Terry, the youngest, also kinda of a brat. They’re mostly smart kids but still kids. Heck, any adult who gained free reign over a city would enjoy the benefits and our protagonists do just that, a way to have some fun while figuring out what’s going on. It’s a tough balance to pull off but the creators walk that line perfectly.

Hipster Hotline: Gargoyles

gargoyles00

In a world where cartoons made in the western hemisphere were made to be goofy, Greg Weisman proposed to Disney a dramatic animated series for young people with a compelling plot, well-rounded characters and contained actual death. That series was Gargoyles.

Gargoyles is about Goliath and his clan, a group of gargoyles that survived a massacre, leaving these few to begin a new life in modern times. Drama, action, adventure, all coupled with great animation and voice acting (especially if you love Star Trek: TNG) made Gargoyles a surprise hit during the Age of Disney Afternoon.

I love me some world building, and friends, you get your fill plus a doggie bag to take home. The show begins in the past, at the gargoyles’ castle home. You think this flashback is only setup for getting them to modern New York, not quite. Important human characters are introduced—characters who, one way or another, we’ll see again. And that’s just the start. Everyone has a story and you learn most are more connected than first thought.
