Freedom is never voluntarily given by the oppressor; it must be demanded by the oppressed. —Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.
What message is Kōhei Horikoshi trying to convey? Okay, the heteromorph’s rioting was wrong, but there has to be a general awareness of what’s happening to them. Sometimes civil unrest is needed to tell the world what’s going on. While destroying everything in their path was a bad idea, coming together to share their pain with those who’ll listen was good.
Bringing the evildoers into the light? I’m down with that. But, trying to change them until they’re “ashamed of their cruelty”? I’m sorry, what? Sure, racists can change. But, it’s not feasible to think ALL of them will “see the light”. That’s where I call bullshit. How about coming up with some actual solutions, Horikoshi? Putting more heroes in rural areas? Improving Quirk Counseling ? Civil Rights laws? Anything other than let’s be good and hope the racists feel bad about being racist one day.
And once again, I’ll mention Spinner losing his ability to verbally debate and defend his views intellectually was a copout. It made the rioters out to be the bad guys instead of painting them in a more morally gray way. Heroes, good. Rioters, bad. Simplifying the battle that way really hurt the story in my eyes.
Again, what’s the message? Were the rioters never supposed to come together at all? To just focus their anger on making the baddies “feel” bad? Nothing. Not one thing was said about nonviolent civil disobedience. All I got was “be good and hope things will change.” I’m so confused and annoyed with this chapter.
This was a dumbass chapter! Maybe I’m missing something. But right now, I feel the message this chapter is trying to communicate is meaningless fluff. No actual solutions. No real debates. Just half-hearted words that sound nice but don’t help to change the heteromorph’s situation. Horikoshi has peppered discrimination into his story and it all built up to this? Screw this arc! You get an F, Horikoshi-sensei.
Oh! And Spinner activated Kurogiri with a burnt dead guy’s hand. Whatever.
