I’m glad SatAM comic is dead. Yeah, I said it.
Keep in mind, this is coming from a person who loved the cartoon back in the nineties and read at least three years worth of the series’ comic book continuation. But, it got convoluted. Mulitple Eggmen, Sonics, and an attempt to reboot that universe so writers didn’t have to reference anything that came before (and not show certain characters someone was suing over). Plus, it was a constant struggle between the game and show characters for screen time. It wasn’t a bad comic but it was time for a reboot—a hard reboot.
So, restart the comic universe without SatAM baggage and what do we get? A better Sonic comic! The writer from the SatAM series returns so it feels the same just with game characters as a focus—at least in the beginning (Hello, Tangle).

The plot’s simple: The story starts after the events of Sonic Forces and the Blue Blur is racing around the planet fighting remnants of Eggman’s army. So far, he’s touched base with Tails, Amy Rose, Knuckles, and Blaze the Cat, and thankfully, each friend’s introduction takes place in their own issue. We take time to see Sonic’s relationship with each character and the friends kicking robo exhaust ports together. That’s exactly what I want in a Sonic comic, him interacting with his friends while whooping butt. It’s an action/adventure story that’s funny when it needs to be. Kudos to the writer and artist. They know what they’re doing and it shows.
The Sonic comics reboot is good so far. No, it’s great. Sometimes simple works if the sum of its parts fits perfectly. Give it a read.
Sidenote: Amy Rose’s characterization is fantastic. She loves Sonic, but it’s part of her personality and she’s not overly obsessive. Great job!
