Camie & Tokoyami, Mystery Duo (My Hero Academia)

toga00

Camie, are you Toga?
So, Camie are you Toga?
Are you Toga, Camie?
You’ve been stabbed by
You’ve been stabbed by
A smooth criminal

Two big questions about chapter 163: Is that the real Camie? And where is Tokoyami? Let’s start with Camie.

I think that’s Toga in disguise. Why? Because her reintroduction is too normal. Up until this chapter most readers would put money on Camie being dead and here she casually reappears ready to retake the Hero Provisional Exam. Sorry, I mean TAKE the exam. Toga impersonated her last time. I don’t think a hero candidate worth their sea salt would think someone else completing half an exam under your identity is fair. Also, if she escaped or was saved from Toga, the school would most likely know and ask her to retake the full exam. So, unless the real Camie is a scummy, that is Toga.

But, why is Toga still impersonating Camie, redgeek? I don’t know. Maybe she was asked to go to a hero school by Shigaraki. Sure, it could be her idea, but I don’t think so now. Back when she first messed with Deku I did, assuming crazy Toga was just being crazy. Now, I think the villains are planning something. We still don’t know how much time she has left in Deku’s form. Maybe…the villains are after All Might. Or, maybe it’s something bigger than that. These days I’m not underestimating Shigaraki. This dude got something planned.

But, what about the heroes? Deku figured out the link between Toga and Camie during the Overhaul arc. I know a lot happened, but no way our tactical, always thinking Deku somehow forgot about that. Yet, it wasn’t touched on at all after the fact. I think there’s some off-panel shenanigans going on. Deku told the authorities and they set a trap for Toga. Endeavor IS on assignment. The new number one is hunting for League members and is hoping Toga will lead him to the biggest fish, Shigaraki!

Survive: Johto Region (Pokemon)

johto-starters00

How long can I survive in my favorite Pokemon region?

Let’s start with the basics. No, actually let’s start with that ariados about to attack me. I hate spiders! I escape but need a pokemon. Don’t have a fishing rod so no water pokemon for me, damn—love my water pokes. Okay, no choice but to grab that wild metapod. Takes a while but it evolves into a butterfree. Beat down a couple six-year old’s level four rattata and get enough money to buy my Big Butt (butterfree’s name) a pokeball.

I can live off berries but need a job. I buy more pokeballs and start catching pokemon, but since I’m not officially registered I can’t catch more than six, no PC boxes. So much for becoming a Gym Leader. It’s the underground pokeworld for me. I use my perfectly balanced team of six pokemon (Butterfree [Big Butt], Raichu [Evil Pikachu, I should change its name], Gengar [Gengar, Was in a hurry that day], Azumarill [Wizard of Az], Sandslash [Prince, everyone should have a pokemon named after Prince], and Umbreon [Fido, so hipster]) and begin building my reputation as a strong pokemon trainer, getting the attention of Team Rocket. Won’t take long before I’m an executive, mowing down some punk kid with a typhlosion who thought he could mess with me.

Team Rocket ultimately does dissolve leaving me to form my own group, Team Tricycle. See, it’s non-threatening so the cops won’t take us seriously. In a couple years, I’ll build enough power to…what the hell am I trying to do again? Oh, yeah, survive. I’m just having so much fun!

Okay, factoring the time taken to catch and train pokemon, the amount of wild pokemon, and sheer annoyance of pokemon contests, I can survive the Johto Region for…

Hipster Hotline: Colorful (anime)

mokoto00

I need a hug.

Colorful is an anime movie released in 2010 about a boy, Makoto Kobayashi, who dies but gets another chance at life inside the body of a boy who committed suicide. With no memories of his previous life, Makoto picks up where the boy left off, seemingly surviving his suicide attempt.

This movie hits close to home. While I never attempted suicide I have thought about it in the past and I certainly been bullied and had an overall lonely school life. It was hard to watch at some points. While not bullied the same way as Makoto, I had my share of bad experiences. But, it wasn’t about the bullying as much as feeling things would never get better. That the normal attitude of most people was constantly set to Uncaring Asshole. Why is the world like this? Why can’t I have a friend? Will things always be this way?

Colorful can’t answer give you solid answers, nothing can. Sometimes things work out, sometimes they don’t, but what the movie does is allow people to see that if you want your life to change, you have to change. A little perspective goes a long way, and if you can focus on being a better you, maybe, something good will happen. It’s not easy, but it is possible.

We learn over the course of the movie about the boy who committed suicide, his family, and why he killed himself. It’s a slow build that keeps you watching, even throwing in some unexpected twists that I won’t even try to touch on. This is a movie best watched knowing the bare minimum. Now, before you dismiss the movie as a bummer fest, there are hopeful moments. You’re rooting for the main character. Yes, the story gets dark, but that means when good things happen it’s that much more meaningful.

Colorful isn’t a movie trying to give advice how to stop bullying. It’s about hope and forgiveness. Life isn’t simple, or maybe it is and we make it complicated, I don’t know. All I know is that this is a great emotional movie deserving of anyone who felt they didn’t belong or just wanted a friend. The highest of recommendations.

Meet the Geek: Diva (Blood+)

Diva00

You are disgusting. An amoral, psychotic, ugly, vicious, pile of human excrement wearing a dress without panties. Oh! Sorry, got a little ahead of myself. Today I get the displeasure of interviewing the most horrible vampire ever, Diva.

Redgeek: …Hello, Diva.
Diva: I’m not ugly.
Redgeek: You are the devil!
Diva: I only do what I’m born to do. Don’t be racist.
Redgeek: What?! You’re a monster. Are we really going to have this conversation?
Diva: This is an interview, isn’t it?
Redgeek: First of all. Chiropterans are not inherently evil.
Diva: No, humanity is. Have you forgotten what was done to me?
Redgeek: And it’s a shame, really. But, massacring everyone at the Zoo is the least of your crimes. What about Riku?
Diva: *sigh* Why does everyone bring up Riku? Doesn’t even pay child support. Get it? Because you can’t pay when you’re dead. Honestly, I did him a favor.
Redgeek: I-I don’t… What you did to Riku… That one act of cruelty makes you one of the worst beings ever to walk the Earth.
Diva: What about me? You never asked how I felt about it now.
Redgeek: Okay, how do you feel?
Diva: Great. *laughs* Killing my sister’s adoptive brother, creating my darling children, and not having to engage in awkward post sex conversation—quite a treat. Plus, Riku was hung like a—
Redgeek: Stop! And to make things worse, you made a move on Kai. The hell is wrong with you?
Diva: That was a joke. Don’t tell me you never joked about raping and killing someone. What a SWJ. Next, I suppose you’ll tell me trying to turn a significant number of the populous into chiropterans was bad.
Redgeek: You know what? We’re done here Diva. I hope you die a painfully ironic death.
Diva: Maybe. Depends on which version of Blood+ you see. Did I just kill the fourth wall? Whoops. *giggle*
Redgeek: And with that, I’ll see you all next time on Meet the Geek.
Diva: I never got to promote my new album. Kanye West is producing it.
Redgeek: Truly a monster through and through.

Is Pound Dead? (One Piece)

Pound00

No.

I love you One Piece, but over and over you prove killing characters is as rare as a Bleach chapter with a background. Pagaya, Pell, Brownbeard, Jack the Drought are some of the manga’s characters who should be dead. And, look, I’m not death hungry. I don’t read One Piece for a body count. Luffy isn’t becoming Frank Castle anytime soon (though Luffy drawn as The Punisher would be cool). But, the situation characters survive in One Piece is ridiculous at times.

But, Oven looked like he was about to slice Pound’s head off?
But, Oda gave Pound the perfect send-off?

Yeah, I agree. But, does that mean he’s dead? Comic book death rules are in effect. Meaning, unless there’s a body, he ain’t dead. And that still holds true for Pedro. Until I see a body neither one is dead, only injured. A pack of bandages away from a full recovery.

So, I’m putting my entire bitcoin fortune on Pound surviving and using my winnings to by a pack of gum. Oh, hell, make it two.

Side note: We finally saw a glance of Big Mom’s husband cycle. Apparently, she gets pregnant, keeping hubby around until the baby’s born then he’s unceremoniously kicked to the curb. Not even enough time to hold the child. Big Mom is cold.

League of Absence (My Hero Academia)

Gigantomachia00

Over the past few chapters we’ve seen the League of Villains do some serious leveling up with Mr. Hype Baddie, Giantomachia, plus an unknown number of new recruits joining and acquiring Overhaul’s anti-quirk bullets and serum. Basically, Shigaraki has everything he needs for another A-level scheme, but like with most ingredients, he’ll need time to prepare. So, I hope you enjoyed seeing the league because barring minor check-ins, I don’t think we’ll be seeing much of them in the foreseeable future.

But we must have balance.
We touched on it a bit with Class A learning super moves, now is the time to see more of that and maybe some other improved skills while Team Facepalm gets ready for the next round to pain. With Provisional License: Part Deux, Bakugou and Todoroki will get their level-up along with Inasa Yoarashi.

But, we need more than that. I’m guessing that inter-school training Ms. Joke proposed will happen soon after, leveling up Class A even more. A maybe, just maybe, we’ll even get another small arc after that. An All Might origin flashback would be nice.

The fact is the League of Villains 3.0 is coming and right now they have the brains, brawn, and tools to cause mega damage. If Class A doesn’t step up, the villains will leave them in the dust. Or, considering Shigaraki, turn them into dust.

A Prescription for Dr. Stone

Senku00

Great art. Great story. So, why aren’t more people reading Dr. Stone?

Maybe it’s the first few chapters.
Dr. Stone is about two high school kids frozen in stone, along with every human on Earth, for thousands of years. They escape and wish to bring back humanity, but an evil high schooler wants to restart humanity without adults or technology.

Now, my problems with the first chapters are Taiju and the manga’s slow start. Dr. Stone started off seemingly as another end of the world story where uber powerful high schoolers fight to survive. That’s part of the story, but there’s a lot more going on. Sticking with the series, you learn that it’s not a battle shounen but a comedy/adventure shounen with science!

Once the story is focused on Senku, the genius high school boy, things get good. He’s the more interesting of the two, a guy wanting to build a world of science using whatever and whoever he can. Senku is the keystone of Dr. Stone. Once he takes the spotlight, the story is off and running.

Did I mention the art is fantastic? Well, it is. Easily one of, if not, THE best drawn manga currently running in Shounen Jump. The comedy starts slow in the series too, plots focusing on the seriousness of the situation with flashes of humor here and there. Again, once Senku gets the full spotlight, the comedy comes busting in. You’ll learn science and you’ll laugh while doing it. A win-win in my book.

Give Dr. Stone a chance. If the first chapter doesn’t do it for you, skip ahead three or four chapters and see if you like it then. If you’re still petrified with boredom, read the latest two chapters and call me in the morning. You’ll feel much better.

Hipster Hotline: Samurai Pizza Cats

SPC00

“What’s that on the ground?”
“Dirt.”

Samurai Pizza Cats will go down in history as the only edited/altered anime fans aren’t upset about. Simple plot, a team of anthropomorphic cats fighting evil while running a pizza shop in downtown Little Tokyo. What made SPC memorable is there unapologetic jokes, puns, and casual destruction of the fourth wall. Even more memorable is most of the humor works. You can tell the writers are having a blast, giving the audience the best lines they can get away with on a kids show. They wrote Samurai Pizza Cats for themselves and I thank them for it.

Even the best written anime needs good voice acting and Samurai Pizza Cats…deliver. Each voice is distinctive and full of life, able to deliv–uh–tell a joke or punch line the perfect way, essentially making even bad jokes land on their feet, heh. I think that’s the show’s secret ingredients, great writing coupled with great voice acting. I don’t think I’ll ever forget any of the main cast voices. They’re that good!

Add all that with the fourth wall annihilating narrator, and the (rumored) drunk theme song singer and you have the recipe for a fun comedy/adventure show ready to eat.

If you’re hunkering for an anime that doesn’t take itself seriously, give Samurai Pizza Cats a watch. It’s stupid for all the right reasons. And, now, I’ll leave you with one of the best quotes in the series, that has to be heard to be fully appreciated, delivered by the great Polly Esther.

“A fully functioning, cybernetic, technologically advanced team of superheroes… and nobody’s got a flashlight?”

Marry me, SPC!
