Music Snobs

music notes00

No one cares if you liked that song before it was cool.

Why do some people seem to think it’s cool to mention they liked a now popular song before it was featured in a movie, TV show or anime? As if that now popular song makes them popular by association, giving them fifteen minutes of fame.

Sorry, but the song was always good, just unknown. It happens. There’re lots of songs on this watery world with more being made every year, every day even! Mainstreamers don’t have access to or aren’t willing to work finding lesser known songs or music artists, instead being force fed by large music companies or relaying on word of mouth from friends or associates.

Worse, are the original fans of a song or artists who don’t like when “their” song goes mainstream. WHAT? How do fans of an anime or other form of media liking a song you love devalues that particular song? Did the artist write it specifically for you? Did the songwriter tweet she/he only wants people who bought all the band’s albums to enjoy it? Saying the obvious is frowned at times but I think our society may have reached a point where this should be stated as default:

Unless the singer or band has a problem with their song going mainstream, stop complaining. If your happiness is based on being one of a few hundred or thousand who know about a song, that’s your problem.

Nothing wrong with loving a song, or a movie, or anything that doesn’t hurt others, but please, please, please stop basing your self-worth on things you love. Love it, enjoy it, share it, and be happy. Save all that outrage for the countless horrible things happening in the world you somehow forgot existed. Remember, you can always blast that underground remix while protesting injustice in the streets.

Overhaul? No, Female My Hero Academia Heroes Are the True Losers This Arc.

froppy00

Welp, the Eri Arc is officially over, well, not “officially” (Support the official release!), and it pains me to say my honeymoon period with My Hero Academia is over.

Not to say the series is going down the toilet. While not a huge fan of the wrap-up, the overall arc was good. Red Riot, Suneater, Lemillion, Toga, Rappa, Shigaraki and Twice all deserve praise. Even Eri found the courage to help save herself in the end, quite the millstone for a kid pretty much at the end of her rope. I look forward to re-reading all the parts I liked. But, there was a HUGE hiccup I want to address.

Why didn’t the female heroes get more chances to shine? I was so excited when Uravity and Froppy were coming along to the yazkuza stronghold. I really thought those two would get to showoff a new attack or have a character defining fight. To say I’m disappointed is an understatement. No one-on-one fight equal the their male counterparts, no cool new attacks, nothing but basic hero roles any nameless grunt could do.

Why Yaoyorozu was recommended?

yao00

Yaoyorozu and Todoroki are the only recommended students in Yuuei’s freshman hero class. Why? Okay, we can guess Todoroki was recommended because his father is a top ranking hero, but why Yaoyorozu? I’m guessing it’s one of two possible reasons:

1. A relative is a top pro hero.

A parent or sibling could be ranked one of the best heroes in Japan. This could also connect our smartest class 1-A student to an upcoming arc. But which hero can it be? I’m putting my money on it being the unknown third ranked hero pre-Kamino arc. Hirokoshi is saving that hero reveal for reasons, this could be one of them.

2. Her family’s business is hero related.

Could they be financing Yuuei? The school seems to have the latest in security, robotics, and overall resources. Has to come from somewhere. And we know Yaoyorozu is rich and smart. Makes sense she got her intelligence from her corporate owner parents.

Whether or not either is true, I think Yaoyorozu’s future arc is gonna be pretty interesting.

Meet the Geek: Kohei Horikoshi [My Hero Academia]

Hirokoshi00

I’m been praising My Hero Academia for a long time. After what seems like forever, I’ve finally been granted a phone interview with it’s creator, Kohei Horikoshi.

Redgeek: Thank you for your time, Hirokoshi-sensei.

Hirokoshi: No, no. Thank you. Always happy to talk with my fans.

Redgeek: Let’s begin with Overhaul. Quite the powerful villain, any hints as to whether or not he’ll survive this arc. I have a little theory his days are numbered. Not saying Deku will kill him. I just think the world of My Hero Academia isn’t big enough for the likes of Shigaraki and Overhaul. Any comments?

Hirokoshi: Yes! Yes! Awesome.

Redgeek: Would you mind clarifying?

Hirokoshi: Kylo Ren, baby. No way is he’s killing momma Leia. I swear I’ll riot if he so much as look as her funny.

Redgeek: What?

Hirokoshi: This will not…go the way…you think! Hell yeah!

Redgeek: Are you watching the Star Wars trailer?

Hirokoshi: Huh? Oh, uh, yeah, but please continue. It’s only my eighty-sixth time. You were saying?

Redgeek: Will Shigiraki kill Overhaul?

Hirokoshi: Fuck yes! God, yes! Rahhhhh!!!!

Redgeek: Was that a yes to my question or—

Hirokoshi: Hot damn. You see that latest trailer. Luke Skywalker in the Millennium Falcon! Oh, oh….uhh! Tissue, tissue.

Redgeek: Woah! Hirokoshi-sensei, I think you’re a little too excited for Star Wars.

Hirokoshi: That’s like being too excited for Avengers four. Did you see that leaked trailer?

Redgeek: Sir, can we please get back on topic?

Hirokoshi: …Sorry. Okay, I’m calm. Back to the subject, I’ll probably name the next place after Kylo Ren, maybe Skywalker if I can get away with it. You think naming the third best hero school Skywalker or Ren is better?

Redgeek: You can always break up the words Sky and Walker, I’d go with that. Now about my theory—

Hirokoshi: Yeah, that’s perfect. Gotta draw it. Let’s talk later, bye. *click*

Redgeek: And there you have it. Overhaul will not be killed by Shigaraki, but Kylo Ren. Tune in next time for the another spoiler packed Meet the Geek.

Hipster Hotline: Gargoyles

gargoyles00

In a world where cartoons made in the western hemisphere were made to be goofy, Greg Weisman proposed to Disney a dramatic animated series for young people with a compelling plot, well-rounded characters and contained actual death. That series was Gargoyles.

Gargoyles is about Goliath and his clan, a group of gargoyles that survived a massacre, leaving these few to begin a new life in modern times. Drama, action, adventure, all coupled with great animation and voice acting (especially if you love Star Trek: TNG) made Gargoyles a surprise hit during the Age of Disney Afternoon.

I love me some world building, and friends, you get your fill plus a doggie bag to take home. The show begins in the past, at the gargoyles’ castle home. You think this flashback is only setup for getting them to modern New York, not quite. Important human characters are introduced—characters who, one way or another, we’ll see again. And that’s just the start. Everyone has a story and you learn most are more connected than first thought.

Buffy Season 11 Thoughts [spoilers]

Buffy the Vampire Slayer 00

I don’t hear a lot of talk about Buffy’s comic book continuation of the TV series. A shame because it’s still great. Yeah, it has its rough patches like the TV show, but overall it’s just as entertaining. Guess the stigma of reading comics turns most people off. That, and I’m sure there’re fans who do even know the comic seasons exist. Well, now you know. Read it!

Sidenote: Season eight wasn’t bad, despite what others may say. It has flaws, including my most hated Big Bad in both the comics and television series, but it had a hell of a strong start. Not crazy about the last third but the other two-thirds more than makeup for it. Very ambitious. Ran too long, in my opinion, but, still a season worthy of Buffy. On to season eleven.

Deku VS Overhaul, Who Wins? [My Hero Academia]

Tomura00

Answer: Tomura Shigaraki

Let’s be honest, Shigaraki is killing it, metaphorically. All For One was right, once he got locked up, his student pulled up his big boy pants and got to work. Work doing what? Not sure, but the man got plans.

After AFO’s defeat, Shigaraki and the League of Villains logically went into hiding. Now, Facepalm-kun could’ve easily just waited until the heat was off then start planning again, but no, oh no. Instead, he sends the league OUT into the world, the opposite of what 99% of law enforcement probably thought they would do, and use AFO as a beacon to find more members. Genius! And, from what we saw from Dabi and Twice, everyone is looking for quality NOT quantity. You ain’t joining if you ain’t got power. What we are seeing is the prelude to League of Villains 3.0. Naturally, we won’t meet these new recruits in an arc not league focused but we did see that same big villain with the radio in Kirishima’s flashback. I don’t think it’s a stretch to figure out that guy will finally join the league.

Hipster Hotline: Buffy the Vampire Slayer

Buffy01

Let’s talk Buffy a bit.
Was only planning to talk about the Buffy season 11 comic (and I will in another article), but my Buffy senses started tingling. Won’t fully analyze the series (if you want that I recommend listening to Buffy podcasts like Dusted or the Hellmouth Podcast), just want to ramble about my love of it—without spoiling too much.

Buffy the Vampire Slayer was a TV show about a high school cheerleader chosen to become another in a long line of girls destined to fight the evils of the supernatural. Each gained some mystical power, trained, fought, and died. Another girl is chosen, the endless cycle continues. Can Buffy survive her fight against the darkness? Does she even want to? Does she have a choice? And will she ever tryout for cheerleading squad again? Tune in to find out. Seriously, you like good storytelling mixed with vampires and other monsters? Watch (and read) it.
